We all enjoy seeing cheerful dogs surrounded by those who care for them. At the same time, it’s devastating to witness abandoned or mistreated pups.
Sadly, for many dedicated dog lovers, seeing these upsetting cases has become far too common.
One day, a Kentucky pastor saw such a sorrowful scene with his own eyes. On the front steps of his church, he discovered a box containing a note—and what was inside truly broke his heart.
Tiny Pups Left Alone
The pastor was deeply moved when he found a cardboard box placed at the church entrance, holding six tiny newborn puppies with no sign of their mother.
Attached to the box was a handwritten message: “Puppies free to a good home. Mixed with blue nose pit bull and breed of the father is unknown.”
Though shaken by the discovery, the pastor quickly gathered his thoughts and focused on what needed to be done.
With little more than the brief message to go on, he decided the best step would be to contact the Powell County Animal Shelter for help.
As soon as staff from the Powell County, Kentucky shelter received the pastor’s call, they responded right away. Thankfully, the condition of the puppies gave them some relief.
“It was dark and going to be a very cold night,” Teresa Stidham, the emplyee of Powell County Animal Shelter, told The Dodo. “The puppies looked to be in good condition and seemed to be freshly taken from their momma.”
Now, the fragile pups were finally on their way to safety.
Searching For A Forever Family
Shortly after the rescue, the shelter moved the puppies to a foster home where they could be cared for until returning to the main facility.
The shelter staff has been making sure the puppies receive everything they need to grow strong. They are also working hard to find them permanent homes. Still, placing a group of six pups together isn’t easy.
Despite the challenge, the team remains determined. They know these little ones deserve to be raised in a loving home. “We feel they would fare better with more attention than we can provide,” Teresa said.
While caring for the puppies, shelter staff are also trying to identify the person who left them in front of the Kentucky church. Their hope is to locate the mother and reunite her with her litter.
Until then, the team is doing everything they can to make sure these pups are safe, healthy, and loved.
