Just imagine: you’re going about your regular activities when someone points out an old, destroyed cardboard box, hinting that furbabies are inside.
That’s exactly what happened to a rescue team in New York after a random passerby uncovered a shocking sight in the parking lot. When the rescuers arrived at the scene and opened the box, their hearts shattered…
Furry Babies Left All Alone
The rescuers at Ten Lives Club in New York are used to heartbreaking abandonment stories, but this particular one shocked them to the core. A random passerby walked inside, stating they saw a cardboard box moving in the parking lot nearby.
When the team arrived at the scene, they found a heartbreaking sight: three teeny-tiny kittens huddled inside.
“Someone came into Ten Lives Club at the Transit Hill Plaza and said they see a “box moving” down further in the parking lot. Our dedicated team went out to investigate and found the kittens,” the rescue organization wrote in the post.
It was a truly devastating sight. Right next to the kittens was a cat bed, indicating that these furry babies were abandoned on purpose.
“The box was basically closed and there was a cat bed in the box so we know this was no accident. The kittens were terrified & starving. This is unacceptable,” the rescuers added.
The dedicated team kept searching for the mom, assuming she could be near, too. A few moments later, their assumptions proved right. She was secretly observing the box with her babies, keeping them in sight the whole time. It was so sad.
The rescuers immediately scooped up the kittens and their mother and took them to the facility.
Eventually, the babies were transferred to the main shelter and then to a foster home, where they will receive the warm care they need to grow strong.
Meanwhile, the mama cat will remain in the shelter’s care. She will be given time to decompress and heal, waiting for her second chance at life.
This Isn’t The First Case Of Abandonment
According to the Ten Lives Club, the kittens being abandoned in a box isn’t the first case of abandonment. Cruel acts like this happen frequently, and are only getting worse year after year.
To avoid such heartbreaking situations, the team urges everyone unable to care for their four-legged friends to contact their surrender line. This way, the number of kittens left at the mercy of the streets would be significantly reduced, and the animals would be given a standing chance to start a new life.
“If you ever find yourself unable to care for your cats or kittens, please call our surrender line. We will work with you. There is ALWAYS a better way,” the New York organization concluded.
Hopefully, with increased awareness, cases like this will become a thing of the past.
