Imagine strolling down the street, minding your own business, when a car suddenly pulls over and someone tosses a dog out.
At first, you’re confused. Maybe the owner is just letting the dog out for a quick walk? But no one gets out of the car.
Instead, the vehicle speeds off, leaving the poor pup behind — alone, confused, and helpless. Sadly, this kind of heartbreaking situation happens far too often.
And it’s exactly what happened to a sweet dog dumped on the streets of Oregon. Fortunately, kindhearted witnesses saw the whole thing — and acted fast.
Alone, Confused, And Holding Onto Hope
Passersby were stunned when they saw a dog abandoned near a park. But what made the scene even more heartbreaking? The dog was left behind with her favorite stuffed monkey.
There’s something so painfully tragic about that image — a dog sitting beside the only comfort item she had, waiting for the people who left her behind.
Shocked and saddened, the bystanders quickly called for help. A California-based shelter responded, but unfortunately, they were already over capacity.
That’s when South Coast Humane Society (SCHS) in Oregon stepped in and offered to take the dog into their care.
Theron Marbury, a team member at SCHS, told The Dodo: “When the rescuers came, she didn’t care about food. She cared about her monkey, and that’s why we call her Monkey.”
Despite being abandoned, Monkey showed a surprisingly upbeat attitude and quickly grew fond of her rescuers.
Her new caretakers couldn’t understand why anyone would go through the trouble of leaving her with her stuffed animal, only to abandon her so cruelly. Still, they knew that little monkey would be her anchor — the one familiar thing helping her through this tough time.
A Wave Of Adoption Interest
As Monkey adjusted to life at the shelter and began interacting with other dogs, the SCHS team felt hopeful. She was resilient, and they were confident she’d bounce back from her trauma.
They shared her story online — and it quickly captured hearts.
Soon, adoption applications started rolling in. People were drawn not just to her sad story, but to her sweet and spirited nature.
With a bright future ahead of her, Monkey was on the path to a life filled with the love she’d always deserved.
The shelter team carefully reviewed applications until they found the perfect match.
Jenifer Alcorn, the shelter’s director, shared:
“They [knew] the breed and had room for her to run and live her best life. They came and met her… and fell in love. At the risk of looking a gift horse in the mouth, I asked if they would meet her kennel mate, Jasper. They decided to take them both!”
In an incredible twist, Monkey not only found her forever family — but she got to bring a friend along, too.
It’s heartwarming to know that both she and Jasper were given a second chance, all because a few compassionate people took action when it mattered most.
From being left to starve on the streets to running free in her forever home, Monkey’s story is a powerful reminder of how much love a rescued dog can give — and how much they deserve in return.
