Dogs are often called our closest companions, and it is easy to see why. They bring comfort and loyalty into daily life, and at times they show a kind of empathy that is hard to ignore.
That is what happened on a routine stroll when a Golden Retriever named Otis surprised his owner with how carefully he responded to a small situation in the grass.
Tiny Lives In The Grass
One afternoon in Torrington, Connecticut, Jenna Laigle took Otis out for his usual walk.
During a short pause, he became fixated on a patch of grass near the trail. He wandered a few steps away, then returned with a different look. Otis seemed worried, so Jenna followed him back to where he had been sniffing.
There, she saw what had caught his attention. Six newborn bunnies were lying out in the open, and their mother was nowhere to be seen.
Otis stayed beside them, alert and still, as if he understood they were exposed.
Gentle Guard Duty
Instead of nudging them around or walking off, Otis carefully tucked the babies between his front paws and licked them softly.
Jenna began scanning the nearby area for the rabbits’ nest, hoping she could move them back to safety quickly.
After a brief search, she located the nest close by and rushed back. Otis had not left the bunnies for a moment.
Together, Jenna and Otis placed the babies back into the nest and made sure they were settled. Once they were secure, Otis finally relaxed and stepped back.
Jenna later shared that this behavior fit Otis’s personality. She described him as gentle and attentive, the type of dog who seems to notice when something is in trouble.
After returning the bunnies, Jenna and Otis moved on and left the area quiet, giving the mother a chance to come back without disturbance.
The moment was a simple reminder that compassion can show up without warning, even between species.
