Few shelter moments are more beautiful than watching a dog finally get picked and leave for a forever home. It feels like the kind of ending everyone had been hoping for.
That is what makes it so painful when the story turns around only a few days later.
Burrito, a lovable dog in New Jersey, knows that kind of heartbreak firsthand.
He was a gentle dog who wanted exactly what so many shelter pets want, a real home, real comfort, and someone to stay. When he was adopted, it seemed like that long-awaited moment had finally come.
But instead of settling into the life he deserved, Burrito was hit with another painful disappointment.
What should have been a fresh start became an unexpected and deeply sad setback instead.
Burrito’s Foster Shares His Side Of The Story
Before Burrito’s adoption, he spent several weeks in a loving foster home with Isabella. During this time, he was affectionate, calm, and well-behaved.
When adoption day came, an older couple took Burrito home from the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter. But within just two days, the couple returned him, claiming he was “too aggressive” and that he had bitten the husband on the hand.
“This dog was returned to the shelter in less than 48 hours after he was adopted for biting and being aggressive,” Isabella shared in a TikTok video.
Isabella was shocked. How could Burrito, a dog who had spent two weeks snuggling and bonding with her, suddenly become aggressive?
Determined to set the record straight, Isabella posted a video of herself cuddling with Burrito, showcasing his gentle nature.
“This is all he has done for the last two weeks. This is what we do,” she said, highlighting Burrito’s true demeanor.
Later, Isabella provided further details on the incident. According to the shelter, Burrito had bitten the husband when he tried to pull him out of the car.
“They get home, he wouldn’t get out of the car. The husband reaches in the car, grabs Burrito, drags him out of the car. Burrito didn’t like that, bit him on the hand,” Isabella explained in the follow-up video.
Despite this isolated incident, Isabella noted that Burrito had never shown aggression toward her father. He may have kept his distance, but he never acted out in an aggressive manner.
A New Beginning For Burrito
Returning to the shelter was difficult for Burrito. The small kennel, filled with noise and stress, was overwhelming, especially after he had experienced the comfort of a home filled with love.
Fortunately, instead of being left in the shelter, Burrito was moved to the care of a long-term behavioral foster.
He is currently not available for adoption while he takes time to decompress. The good news is that he will still experience the comfort of a home environment. With patience, time, and the right people, Burrito will eventually find the forever family he truly deserves.
Burrito’s striking eyes and soulful nature show that sometimes a misunderstanding can cost a dog their chance at a home. However, second chances can always make things right.
