Washington Officer Crawls Into Pipe To Save Injured Dog After Car Accident

While patrolling the streets of Pierce County, Washington, a sheriff’s deputy witnessed a devastating moment.

A stray white dog attempted to cross the road but was struck by a passing car. Injured and terrified, the pup bolted from the scene, desperately searching for shelter.

Rushing To The Injured Pup

Summoning every ounce of strength, the frightened animal squeezed into a concrete pipe near the crash site. Concerned for her safety, the deputy followed quickly, determined to help.

He crouched low and peered into the dark opening, hoping to spot her. Soon, two glowing eyes met his gaze, a silent plea from the injured dog.

Refusing to leave her behind, the officer spoke in a soft, gentle voice, attempting to coax the pup out of her hiding spot. His gentle words worked, and the pup slowly limped forward.

With care, he lifted her into his arms and transported her to a veterinary clinic for urgent treatment.

A Critical Moment At The Vet

At the clinic, staff scanned for a microchip, but none was found. Without an owner, the dog faced the grim possibility of euthanasia.

Thankfully, People for Animal Care & Kindness (P.A.C.K.) in Gig Harbor, Washington, stepped in.

The organization pledged to cover all costs for her emergency surgery, ensuring she would receive life-saving care.

She was transferred to Sumner Veterinary Hospital, where she was named Piper and began her recovery.

“I was so sad to see this beautiful dog,” said the marketing manager for Sumner Veterinary Hospital, Nichol Phillips.

Finally receiving the attention and care she required, Piper began to feel secure and protected.

It truly breaks my heart that she found safety in an underground culvert. We are so grateful to the PCSD deputy who shed his gear and crawled into the pipe to get her.

After surgery, Piper moved into a foster home where she could heal in comfort, regain confidence, and begin to socialize with other dogs.

She quickly began to thrive, enjoying car rides, wagging her tail, and bonding with other dogs.

With time, Piper is expected to make a full recovery. Once healed, she will be ready for adoption, leaving behind her painful past and stepping into a joyful new life.

A Reminder To Drive Safely

Statistics from Pet Playgrounds reveal that around 1.2 million dogs lose their lives in vehicle-related accidents each year. Many of these tragedies involve pets who were not properly secured in yards or vehicles.

Traveling with pets can be wonderful, but safety must always come first. Dogs near roads should be secured, as curiosity or excitement can lead them to dart into traffic.

Whether you’re a pet owner or simply a driver, stay alert. Protect your furry companions and watch for animals who may wander near the road.
