If there’s one thing that never fails to tug at my heart, it’s watching dogs get passed over simply because of a physical difference they had no control over.
They’re often ignored for reasons that have nothing to do with who they are inside, and it only adds to the weight they already carry.
Worse still, many of these dogs begin to feel downhearted about their circumstances, making it even harder for them to stay hopeful. While rescuers do all they can to show them comfort, it’s never quite the same as having a real home.
That’s exactly what happened to one gentle pup in Missouri, born with a condition that has made his journey to a forever home much more difficult.
Box Was Born With An Underbite

When Box first arrived at Pawportunities Animal Rescue, his appearance left the staff stunned.
His previous owner had given him up due to a severely pronounced underbite. After asking questions, the team learned that the man was a breeder.
It quickly became clear that the breeding situation had been anything but ethical. The man wasn’t interested in the dogs’ well-being, only in profit.

As soon as Box began to show signs of his underbite, the breeder decided he no longer had any use for him and gave him up to the shelter.
Although his actions were harsh, surrendering Box was at least better than abandoning him entirely. Far too many dogs aren’t given even that small chance.
Now that he’s safe, Box has a new opportunity to find a loving family, though his path ahead still won’t be easy.
His Journey Isn’t Over Yet

Once Box was settled into a kennel at the rescue, the staff got to know him better. Despite everything he had endured, the little Chihuahua proved to be incredibly gentle.
They determined he was around six years old and, thankfully, had no serious medical issues. That offered a glimmer of hope for his future. All he could do now was wait.
Though being at the shelter has offered him safety, it’s also been a challenge. Box doesn’t do well with loud noises and has grown weary from the long days.
Still, every time his caregivers stop by to check on him, his spirit lifts. He recognizes them and seems to understand that they’re there to help. Their presence brings him comfort.

He’s still a little shy around unfamiliar people, but once someone earns his trust, he leans gently into their touch. It’s his quiet way of saying he feels safe.
Box’s future remains uncertain, but his rescuers refuse to give up hope. They’re confident that someone will look beyond his appearance and recognize the love he has to give.
He truly is a special little Chihuahua, and they believe that the right person will come along and give him the chance he’s been waiting for.
