Summer in Michigan means lake time, and what’s better than bringing your furry best friend along for the adventure?
I’ve spent years exploring Michigan’s waterways with my golden retriever, Scout, and we’ve discovered some amazing spots where dogs can splash, paddle, and play to their heart’s content.
Whether your pup is a seasoned swimmer or just getting their paws wet, these ten lakes offer the perfect combination of dog-friendly shores and clean water for a tail-wagging good time.
1. Torch Lake’s Crystal Blue Paradise

Torch Lake’s waters aren’t just for humans!
My dog practically dragged me here after our first visit. The gradual drop-off makes it perfect for dogs still getting comfortable with swimming.
The sandbar on the south end provides a fantastic play area where pups can wade in shallow water or venture deeper as confidence builds. Just be mindful during busy summer weekends when boat traffic increases.
Local tip: Morning visits (before 10 AM) offer the most peaceful experience for water-loving canines. The lake’s clean, clear water means you can easily keep an eye on your pooch as they paddle around in doggy bliss.
2. Lake Charlevoix’s Dog-Friendly Shores

Stunning Lake Charlevoix offers several access points where four-legged swimmers are welcome. The Ferry Beach area became our favorite spot after Scout made friends with a local Labrador who showed him all the best swimming holes.
What makes this lake special is the mix of sandy beaches and shallow entry points perfect for dogs of all swimming abilities. The clean, clear water lets you keep track of underwater stick retrievals.
Many lakeside communities here have embraced dog culture, with water bowls outside local businesses and even some dog-specific events during summer months. Just remember to pack waste bags and keep your pup leashed when not in the water.
3. Crystal Lake’s Pristine Waters

Your water-loving companion will thank you for a trip to Crystal Lake! This jewel in Benzie County offers some of the cleanest swimming water in Michigan. The public access point near Beulah provides a perfect entry spot for dogs eager to cool off.
The sandy bottom is gentle on paws, and the gradual slope into deeper water gives timid swimmers a chance to build confidence. Crystal Lake’s cooler temperature (typically 5-10 degrees below other nearby lakes) makes it ideal for active breeds who tend to overheat.
Early evenings here create magical moments.
4. Houghton Lake’s Spacious Canine Playground

This lake offers plenty of room for energetic dogs to swim without crowding. The first time we visited, Scout couldn’t believe his luck – so much water to explore!
The lake’s expansive shallow areas are perfect for dogs who prefer wading to swimming. South Shore Park provides excellent access with gentle slopes into the water and plenty of space for shaking off afterward.
Locals recommend the eastern shore for fewer boats and more peaceful swimming spots. Since the lake bottom is primarily sand and soft sediment, it’s comfortable for dogs spending hours retrieving toys from the water. Just watch for fishing lines during peak season!
5. Silver Lake’s Dune-Side Doggy Dips

Silver Lake also offers fantastic swimming opportunities for four-legged adventurers. The contrast between dune exploration and cooling lake swims creates the perfect day of varied activities for energetic pups.
The lake’s western access points provide gradual entries where dogs can ease into swimming. After a morning hike in the dunes with Scout, nothing beat watching him race into the refreshing water with pure joy.
Water quality here remains consistently good throughout summer. The lake’s moderate size means waves stay manageable for smaller dogs, while the surrounding state park land ensures plenty of natural shoreline remains accessible.
Just keep dogs leashed in designated areas and away from marked swimming beaches.
6. Big Bear Lake’s Woodland Water Paradise

Unlike busier lakes, Big Bear’s peaceful atmosphere means fewer boats and more uninterrupted swimming time. The lake’s tea-colored water (from natural tannins) is actually quite clean and typically warmer than clearer lakes.
During our visits, Scout loved the fallen logs along the shore that served as perfect jumping-off points.
The rustic nature of this lake means you’ll want to pack everything your dog needs – fresh water, towels, and first aid supplies. The trade-off for fewer amenities is a more authentic northwoods swimming experience.
7. Lake Leelanau’s Twin-Basin Canine Haven

Narrows Road Park grants excellent public access where dogs can safely enter the water. My retriever particularly enjoyed the gentle current in the narrows section – it created the perfect resistance for an extra workout during his swim.
Local wineries surrounding the lake often welcome leashed dogs on their patios, making this area ideal for a full day of dog-friendly activities. Just be sure to rinse your pup after swimming to remove any lake water before these visits.
8. Clare County’s Lake George: A Hidden Gem

Sometimes the best swimming spots are the ones fewer people know about. Lake George in Clare County remains relatively undiscovered compared to Michigan’s more famous lakes.
The public access site offers a gradual entry point where dogs can ease into swimming at their own pace. What surprised me most was how warm this lake gets by mid-summer – no shivering swimmers here!
The surrounding area maintains its small-town charm, and locals are generally welcoming to visiting canines. With fewer watercraft during weekdays, mornings provide serene swimming opportunities.
Just remember that this lake doesn’t have the extensive facilities of larger destinations, so come prepared with everything your dog needs.
9. Gun Lake’s Yankee Springs Access

The Yankee Springs Recreation Area provides the best combination of facilities and swim-friendly shoreline for canine visitors.
What makes this lake special for dogs is its varied shoreline – from sandy beaches to more natural, tree-lined areas where water-loving pups can choose their preferred entry style. The lake’s excellent water quality consistently earns high marks, ensuring a healthy swimming environment.
After a particularly hot hiking day, my dog discovered the joy of Gun Lake’s cool waters. The mix of open water and quieter coves means you can find the perfect swimming spot based on your dog’s confidence level and the day’s weather conditions.
10. Portage Lake’s Island-Dotted Waters

This lake’s irregular shoreline creates numerous small bays where dogs can swim with minimal boat traffic.
What fascinated Scout most were the small islands visible from shore – they seemed to spark his curiosity during every swim. The public access points near Houghton provide easy entry, though the water stays cooler here than southern Michigan lakes even in midsummer.
After swimming, the lakeside trail system offers perfect cool-down walks with continued water views.
Local dog owners recommend morning swims when the lake’s surface is typically calmer and the rising sun illuminates the surrounding hills. Just keep an eye on weather conditions, as this lake can develop choppy waves quickly.
