Massachusetts Hiker Finds Abandoned Guinea Pigs In Woods And Sparks A Rescue Effort

A hiker from Massachusetts was enjoying a walk through the woods when he spotted something furry along the trail and hurried over to investigate.

Upon closer look, he found two abandoned guinea pigs and felt both shocked and heartbroken. Without hesitation, he rescued one, but the other ran off into the forest.

Concerned for the missing guinea pig, he quickly called his cousin, Elizabeth Wendell, for help.

Two Sisters Join Forces To Save A Scared Guinea Pig

Elizabeth recruited her sister Lucia, and the two sisters set out to find the frightened guinea pig.

Although aware that capturing the timid animal would be challenging, they were determined to bring it to safety

When they finally spotted it, the guinea pig immediately headed deeper into the woods to hide.

“When we spotted him, he noticed us and started heading farther into the forest. We were super nervous because you could hear birds around and once he disappeared he’d be gone for good,” Wendell told The Dodo.

The sisters tried offering lettuce and making guinea pig sounds to gain its trust, but the little one remained fearful.

Eventually, Elizabeth managed to corner and catch the guinea pig.

Near where the guinea pigs were found, the sisters discovered a cardboard box, leading them to believe the animals had been deliberately abandoned. The thought saddened them deeply.

From Neglected To Nurtured

The second guinea pig was in poor condition—thin and cold. The sisters took it to their car, offered lettuce, and worked to warm its body.

At first, the guinea pig seemed unsure as the rescuers held it, but its spirits lifted when reunited with its sibling.

“He was so happy to be reunited with his brother. They were making the sweetest noises at each other,” Wendell added.

Guinea Pig Sanctuary, located in Massachusetts, provided the family with guidance on caring for the two. Elizabeth, Lucia, and their cousin gave the guinea pigs a bath and took them for a veterinary checkup.

Thankfully, despite their abandonment, both guinea pigs showed no signs of trauma. They warmed up quickly and enjoyed playful moments with their rescuers.

The guinea pigs have since made a full recovery and have found a loving forever home eager to cherish them.
