Working as a rescuer, it’s really difficult to look out for so many dogs and also actively work to find them a new home.
Because of that, a lot of dogs can stay in the shelter a lot longer than they would like. However, that doesn’t mean that their rescuers don’t care.
Sometimes, they will try taking pups to dog events or posting their story on social media, and this can help so many of them.
However, what this man did was also a very clever idea. At one point, he decided to take a pup, named Elmer, for a run in hopes that exposure would help him find a home. What happened next was pretty surprising.
Well, I Didn’t See That Coming!

As someone who was used to being around dogs, Wesley Swainston started working as a volunteer for the Adoption First shelter in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Considering he was in the Marine Corps, he did as much as he could in his free time, and he thought of a great way to help shelter dogs get more active.
Because he would run often, he would volunteer to take dogs for a run where they would get a break from all the chaos. The pups just got to enjoy being outside for a while.

They also got a lot of exposure, and this increased their chances of getting adopted. He also hands out their “business cards,” so the people who come across these pups know they are up for adoption.
When he moved to New Mexico, he started volunteering for the Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center.
It was there that he first met Elmer, an adorable dog who spent over 130 days in the shelter without finding a home.
Elmer Is A Pretty Shy Pup

This pup was pretty shy, so that impacted her chances of finding a home. He decided to take Elmer for a run, and that was when something surprising happened.
He stopped to talk to a runner who was there, and he told her about Elmer’s story. Wesley was so happy to see that the woman seemed to care about the pup.
While she wouldn’t adopt the pup, she was more than willing to spread the word about this pup to other people because she believed that he deserved a good home.

The three of them continued their run. Eventually, Elmer and Wesley went back to the shelter in New Mexico after a day well spent.
This was not only great exercise for this pup, but it also made it clear to other people that this pup was available for adoption, and I am hoping that things will soon turn out great for Elmer.
Even though he’s still waiting for the good news, it’s absolutely wonderful that he has such amazing people around him, and I am certain that he will find a forever home soon.
