We’ve told many stories about how devoted mama dogs are when it comes to caring for their babies. They pour all their time and energy into keeping them protected.
Their only goal is for their puppies to grow up strong and have a good life. However, some mothers take that commitment even further.
There are mama dogs who simply can’t cope with being apart from their pups, and it leaves them feeling overwhelmed.
In this case, a loving mama and her puppy were brought to a shelter in Kentucky, where staff immediately noticed that this mother wasn’t at ease without her little one nearby.
She Just Wanted To Stay Close

After a husky named Miss Honey and her young pup were brought to the Kentucky Humane Society, the staff welcomed them and tried to help them settle in.
It was immediately clear to everyone how tightly bonded she was to her baby. They were rarely apart, always sticking close to one another.
The devoted mama did everything she could to make sure her puppy was okay. When staff weighed Miss Honey, they found she weighed only 33 pounds.

That wasn’t a good sign. It meant she had been underfed for quite some time, and her baby had probably been affected by it as well.
Jennifer Harris, who works at the shelter, told The Dodo: “Miss Honey’s maternal instincts led her to prioritize her 2-month-old baby, Matilda. As a nursing mama, Miss Honey gave everything she had to her innocent pup, leaving her own body lethargic, malnourished and in desperate need of TLC.”
Matilda Faced A Tough Injury

Even with Miss Honey doing everything in her power, her puppy, Matilda, had a serious leg injury that caused her a lot of trouble.
She also lost feeling in the injured leg, and rescuers tried to clean and wrap the wounds. Throughout the treatment, Miss Honey cried nonstop.
Harris added: “While our veterinary team was cleaning and wrapping Matilda’s leg wounds, we heard the gut-wrenching screams of Miss Honey from down the hall.”

One of the workers stepped outside to help calm her down. Miss Honey trusted the staff, but being apart from her puppy during the treatment was clearly upsetting.
As soon as it was over and the two were back together, she seemed much calmer.
Since both mom and pup were now on the road to recovery, the team at the shelter arranged for them to go to a foster home where they could rest in peace.
A New Chapter Is Beginning

They now have food, shelter, and a caring family to watch over them. But while things started off well, there were still some hurdles ahead.
After examining Matilda’s leg again, the vets confirmed that it couldn’t be saved. The only option was to remove it. As sad as that sounds, it had to be done.
She went through the surgery successfully, and the team reunited her with Miss Honey right away. Her mama stayed right beside her through it all.
Harris concluded: “When it comes to humans, Matilda is more confident than Miss Honey, but she’s coming around now that she knows we’re here to help her.”
It’s genuinely touching to see how close these two are. Miss Honey might just be the most devoted mama dog I’ve ever seen, and I truly hope they get to stay together in a loving home.
