Kids Leave Heartbreaking Goodbye Letter With Their Dog At South Carolina Shelter

Seeing a dog in a shelter, you never really know what kind of story hides behind those sad, searching eyes.

But Rhoudy’s story, a three-year-old Terrier mix, left everyone shaken in a way they didn’t expect.

When staff at the Greenville Humane Society, South Carolina, first met this sturdy pup, they assumed he was just another shelter intake. That changed the moment they discovered a small handwritten note tucked in with his belongings.

It was a child’s drawing paired with a message so innocent and pure that it moved the entire team to tears.

A Note Too Painful To Read Without Tear

Even though little was known about his past, the scrap of paper that arrived with Rhoudy was one of the most difficult things his new caregivers had ever read.

Clearly, his family had made the painful decision to surrender him. But some of the children in the household couldn’t let him go without leaving behind their feelings. The note read:

“We love you Rhoudy. I will miss you, Rhoudy. But you’re going home! And I hope your people love you as much as I do,”.

After Rhoudy settled at the shelter, volunteers tried to trace his background. But contacting his family proved impossible.

All they could do was respond to the note in the only way they could think of: through a heartfelt message on social media, hoping the children might one day see it.

“We know how hard it was to say goodbye. But you were so brave and so strong. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made, but he knows how much you love him,” GHS wrote in a Facebook post.

The shelter’s reply soon spread widely online, breaking hearts across the country. But along with the sadness came reassurance. Rhoudy was in good hands now.

“He’s doing so good. He’s gone for lots of walks and has all of the toys you brought him in his bed. He’s being given so much love. Yes, he misses you. But he will always love you. Don’t you ever forget that, OK,” the South Carolina rescue added.

Rhoudy Still Hoping For A Forever Family

Despite his difficult start, Rhoudy is now safe thanks to the people who took him in.

He’s no longer just a dog sitting in a kennel, waiting. Instead, he’s been able to show his playful, energetic nature to the staff who adore him. Still, it’s clear that what he needs most is a permanent home.

Rhoudy is full of energy and adores romping around with other dogs. He thrives on attention and loves being the center of it.

“I’m a bit of a rough and tumble kind of guy and I love to play and rough house with other dogs… I’m looking for a family who will give me lots of love and attention, and who will keep me active and engaged,” the rescue wrote on their website.

Someday soon, Rhoudy hopes to meet the family that will see him for the adventurous, lovable dog he is. One thing is certain, though: whoever opens their home to him will be gaining an incredible companion.
