DNA testing your dog is solid and relevant — until it’s not.
Picture it: you’ve just rescued a dog from a shelter, been told he’s one breed, and then, upon coming home, you learn his DNA is a bit off.
When a Reddit user @juleslizard adopted her Great Dane mix that initially came from a Mississippi shelter, this is exactly what happened.
She expected her pup to grow significantly over time, but one thing about his breed turned out not to be breed-related: his unusually long, massive tail!
Soon enough, the entire internet was raving about this unusual feature, turning the pup into a real sensation!
Is It Even Real?
One thing is for sure: this Mississippi boi isn’t an ordinary dog. While officially deemed to be a Great Dane mix, his owner is not so convinced.
Given his behavior and her previous experience, she also believes he must have some Malinois or Shepherd DNA in him, too.
And his tail? That unusually long “kangaroo tail” doesn’t seem to be related to any of the breeds mentioned… at least not to a regular pup!
A Reddit post reading “His DNA forgot to turn off tail growth” about the pup’s strange, yet impressive tail size, immediately sparked an internet debate.
While some users think this is a completely normal occurrence in bigger dogs, some find it quite unusual. But everyone seems to agree on this: this boy’s tail is impressive!
According to his owner, the pup, who just turned one, almost never wags it, and he always keeps it down for balance.
“He really doesn’t wag it much (so far)! He tends to hold it straight down or straight out for balance when he runs. He also curls it up over his back when he’s listening,” the owner wrote in the comment section.
So far, his clumsiness and “lack of space” when he lounges on the couch are the biggest issues.
Other than that, this strange “DNA mistake” isn’t that big of a deal for the dog. However, it sure is an internet sensation!
The Comments Are Hilarious
The Reddit post about the dog’s mysteriously long tail soon exploded on the internet, leading to a hilarious comment section in just a few days.
Many people joked about the dog’s appearance, comparing him to a kangaroo and a whip.
“He looks like a massive kangaroo mouse! I’ve never seen such a long tail on a dog. He’s really adorable,” one user wrote.
“I imagine getting hit by his wagging tail is like by a bullwhip,” another commenter added.
“One dog who doesn’t have trouble catching his own tail,” the third person joked.
Despite the popular opinion that his tail is a hilarious clumsiness starter pack, his owner believes it’s what makes him truly one of a kind.
His momma sees his tail as the most graceful part of his body, and nothing would change her mind. Not even a lack of space on the couch, a spilled drink every now and then, or an occasional stumble on the stairs.
