Hope For Paws is no stranger to unusual and daring rescues, but this particular mission stands out as one of the most demanding the California-based rescue group has ever faced.
Late one night, the HFP team received an urgent email—faint kitten cries were reportedly coming from inside the wall of a home.
Without hesitation, Eldad, founder of Hope For Paws, along with rescuers Loreta and JoAnn, rushed to the location to investigate.
They had no idea they were about to embark on a rescue so complex—and nearly hopeless.
Kittens Trapped Behind The Wall
Arriving at the home around midnight, the team quickly learned the tiny cries the homeowners had reported had stopped nearly eight hours before.
Fearing the worst, the rescuers worried that the kittens may not have survived.
“After 8 hours without making a sound, I feared they already passed away,” Eldad said.
With no clear sign of life, the situation became even more delicate. In order to proceed, the team had to ask the homeowner for permission to damage his property.
“This rescue was seriously challenging… without any indication of life, we had to ask the homeowner to destroy his property,” they explained in a Facebook post.
Wearing masks and using flashlights, the team got to work—cutting holes into the wall, trying to locate any sign of the kittens.
To ease the tension, they joked about some of the odd things they’d found in walls during past rescues. But this time, all they saw at first were old newspapers—no kittens.
They decided to expand the hole.
Even then, there was no sign of life. It seemed they might have to leave the home empty-handed.
But just when they were ready to give up, Loreta’s keen eye spotted a flicker of movement. The kittens were alive!
Drilling a larger opening into the living room wall, they were finally able to reach the trapped kittens—two tiny fluffballs, around two weeks old.
“We thoroughly checked that there were no more kittens in the wall,” the rescue wrote.
A Heartwarming Rescue
No one could say for sure how the kittens ended up trapped, but the team had a theory.
“We believe they fell from the attic to the ground (15ft), and once that happened, the mom relocated the siblings, and she was never seen again by the homeowner,” the rescuers shared.
Once safely rescued, JoAnn stepped in to stabilize them with sugar water to boost their glucose levels. Her quick actions likely saved their lives.
“She became their mom, and for the next 8 weeks she bottle-fed them, kept them clean and warm, and the result is just amazing,” they said.
The rescuers named the kittens Blondie (female) and Dagwood (male).
They were soon placed under the care of The Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats, who committed to fostering them and helping them find their forever homes.
Though no formal update has been shared, it’s safe to say that these adorable little survivors are likely now growing up safe, happy, and loved.
