As a dog lover, it is almost impossible to turn your back on a dog in need of help. However, sometimes there are simply not enough resources to save them all… And that breaks my heart!
When Laura Hsiao and her daughter Maya recently visited a Georgia shelter where she volunteered, they walked in on a heartbreaking scene. Dori, one of the dogs, was only a few hours away from euthanasia, as no one had come to pick her up.
Maya, who was devastated by the dog’s situation, couldn’t accept the fact that this sweet girl’s time was running out. So, instead of leaving, she insisted on staying with her and being her friend in those last moments.
“Dori Needs Me”

This wasn’t the first time Maya accompanied her mom at the shelter.
As a volunteer at Fulton County Animal Shelter in Atlanta, Georgia, Laura brought her daughter to the facility plenty of times, and it’s safe to say that Maya, too, developed a strong bond with the four-legged friends.
When she spotted Dori, who practically begged for help in her tiny enclosure, just hours away from euthanasia, Maya was heartbroken. She immediately approached the dog and showered her with love.

Maya’s goal was clear: staying with Dori as long as needed.
“‘I’m not leaving until she’s safe’, said my 8 year old,” Laura wrote in a Facebook post.
“‘Maya, we have to go. We were just stopping by to see a few dogs before getting school supplies’,” her mom responded.
“Dori needs me. Every time I cry about no one wanting her, she is pawing at me,” the girl said.

Laura explained that her children often feel solidarity with shelter dogs. However, it is impossible for the family to provide help for every single one of them.
Fortunately, Dori’s help was on the way that very day. The only problem was: it wasn’t the perfect fit.
The pup was taken in on a trial adoption basis. While sweet, house-broken, and perfectly mannered, Dori not getting along with the family’s pet rabbit was a deal breaker. Once again, she found herself in a tiny kennel.
“We thought she was safe, but she was returned just days later for not liking the resident rabbit. She will be back on the euthanasia list this week,” added Laura.
She Deserves To Be Happy

Dori’s adoption failure was definitely not the fault of her own, nor her owners’. Sometimes, it’s just the wrong fit.
While Dori is a genuinely adorable and friendly dog, she definitely needed someone who would understand her, possibly a family of adults with no other pets.
“We think she’d be great with older kids. Also she would probably benefit with dogs her size or larger as playmates. She is a little mouthy like a puppy but just needs some training,” her adopters shared in the post.
Fortunately, that “special someone” arrived just in time!

For the second time, Dori was saved from the euthanasia list. And this time — it was for good!
After enduring so much turbulence in life, this lovely shelter girl has finally found her perfect match, and she couldn’t be happier. From now on, it’s all about love, cuddles, and fun for Dori. Her kennel days are definitely behind her!
