Jackson is a tiny puppy whose struggle to survive began in a place no one would expect. He was discovered inside an abandoned box sitting along a curb in San Jose, California.
Far too young to manage on his own, he faced his earliest days surrounded by fear, exposure, and uncertainty. His outlook seemed fragile, yet everything changed when help arrived at just the right moment.
Compassionate rescuers stepped in quickly, giving him the care he desperately needed and turning his situation around.
What started as a worrying discovery soon became a moving story of healing, strength, and a fresh chance at life.
A Fragile Start
“He could fit in the palm of your hand. He was less than a pound,” said Ashley Kotkin, Jackson’s foster mom.
Ashley was contacted by friends who had found the small, helpless puppy in distress. As someone deeply involved in animal rescue, she did not hesitate to help.
When she first saw him, Jackson was in terrible condition. His fur was covered in flea dirt, his skin was sore from urine exposure, and his body was extremely weak.
At around three weeks old, he needed constant attention and careful feeding. “I spent a lot of time with him making sure that he was eating enough,” Ashley told The Dodo.
Soon, Ashley realized something wasn’t right and took him to the vet for further tests.
Thankfully, the Santa Clara-based organization Every Pet’s Dream agreed to sponsor Jackson’s medical care, giving him the best chance of survival.
Fighting To Survive
At the clinic, veterinarians discovered that Jackson was severely anemic and had dangerously low blood counts. He needed two blood transfusions to save his life.
The medical team also learned that his vision was limited and that he might have hearing problems.
After several days of treatment, medication, and steady care, Jackson began to improve. His energy returned little by little, and he started gaining weight. Despite all that he had endured, his determination to live never faded.
A New Beginning
As Jackson grew stronger, his true personality began to show. His playful nature and confidence soon filled the home with joy.
“We’re helping him adapt to his surroundings. Because of the challenges he has, his other senses are definitely heightened,” Ashley shared.
One of his most endearing traits was a tiny growl that earned him the nickname Jackson Growlaxy.
“He’s not just loved, but given everything that he needs possible to grow up big and strong and lead the happiest life,” Ashley said.
Under Ashley’s care, Jackson blossomed into a cheerful and lively puppy, eager to explore the world.
Though his beginning was uncertain, Jackson, now called Bou, has overcome every challenge. Today, he is thriving in a loving forever home, surrounded by people who adore him.
His transformation from a frightened, fragile pup to a joyful companion reminds us of the incredible difference compassion can make.
