Dogs have a way of showing empathy that few animals can match. Their natural instinct to care for others makes them incredible companions, always ready to offer comfort, whether to humans or fellow animals.
This is the story of a gentle Great Dane whose compassion helped his foster sibling navigate severe separation anxiety.
Tofu’s Intense Anxiety
When Jordan welcomed Tofu into her Florida foster home from a shelter, she quickly noticed he struggled with intense separation anxiety. He could not tolerate being apart from her.
This anxiety turned Tofu into an expert at escaping, always finding ways to remain close to his foster mom. Jordan told The Dodo: “He was immediately glued to my side, like I was his protector.”
Tofu was shy and cautious, rarely engaging with the other dogs in the house and mostly keeping to himself. Jordan added, “He was definitely under 100 pounds at the time when he should be weighing 110, 115.”
Jordan focused on helping him gain weight and build strength. When he was surrendered, she was informed he was partially blind and deaf.
It took time for Tofu to feel comfortable around the other dogs. Thankfully, they were gentle and never forced him to play.
A Bond That Heals
The first companion Tofu connected with was Jordan’s Great Dane, Zoot. From the beginning, the two dogs enjoyed each other’s presence.
To make them feel secure, Jordan placed Tofu’s bed next to Zoot’s so they could nap side by side.
Whenever Jordan had to step out, house cameras revealed that Tofu struggled tremendously in her absence. He often appeared anxious and restless, unsure how to soothe himself.
That was when Zoot stepped up. The gentle Great Dane would lie next to Tofu during these stressful moments, offering the reassurance and calm he desperately needed.
This simple act of care helped Tofu gradually manage his fears, highlighting just how much dogs can empathize and support one another.
Over time, Tofu became more confident, began playing with the other foster dogs, and visibly improved in both health and demeanor.
Jordan shared, “After like a month and a half, he was starting to fill out much nicer.”
The happiest chapter came when Tofu finally found his forever home, joining a family eager to give him love, stability, and security. Jordan felt immense joy knowing the shy, anxious pup had transformed into a healthier, happier dog ready for a fresh start.
