Cheesecake was a small stray wandering the streets of Oklahoma until she was rescued by the organization A Friend of Jack.
Not long after, Iliana Broad learned that this gentle pup was in need of a foster home. The moment Iliana saw Cheesecake, she was captivated and instantly decided she wanted to care for her.
Cheesecake Begins A New Life
Since Iliana lived in Denver, Cheesecake had to travel from Oklahoma by plane. The pup appeared thrilled for the journey, eager to leave her uncertain past behind for a more secure and loving environment.
“At that stage, our goal is really just to make sure the new foster settles in OK, eats food and starts filling out and gaining weight, and can get some rest,” said Iliana.
Cheesecake adapted quickly to her new home, yet Iliana noticed signs suggesting her foster dog might be hiding an important secret.
“I realized she was showing some early pregnancy signs. I asked the women at A Friend of Jack if they had been told she was pregnant, and they said there was no indication that she was, but that I should take her to the vet for a quick scan. We went to the closest vet, and they said there were no visible puppies in any imaging.”
A Secret Comes To Light
Despite the veterinarian’s assurance that Cheesecake was not pregnant, Iliana kept a close watch on her.
Within days, Cheesecake’s belly visibly expanded, confirming Iliana’s suspicions that something significant was happening.
Iliana considered that during the first vet visit, Cheesecake may have been in the very early stages of pregnancy, making it difficult to detect on scans.
A second veterinary appointment revealed a stunning reality: Cheesecake was indeed pregnant and only days away from giving birth.
Illiana wrote, “The imaging showed so many puppies that we couldn’t even be sure how many there were. One vet said nine, another said ten, and we all just laughed about how bonkers that imaging was!”
The Arrival Of The Puppies
One week later, with Iliana’s careful assistance, Cheesecake delivered nine robust and energetic puppies.
Following a dessert-inspired naming convention based on their mother, the pups were called Mocha, Oreo, Pumpkin, Strawberry, Blueberry, Cocoa, Fudge, Vanilla Bean, and Turtle.
Immediately after birth, Cheesecake became gravely ill and was unable to nurse her litter herself.
Iliana, with the support of her partner, took over feeding duties, bottle-feeding each puppy individually. Although the process was intense and demanding, they devoted themselves wholeheartedly to their care.
After this journey, Iliana and her partner knew they could not part with Cheesecake, and they officially adopted her.
Cheesecake’s Happy Ending
As the puppies thrived, all nine were quickly placed in loving forever homes.
Cheesecake now enjoys a life of comfort, security, and affection, free from the hardships of her former stray existence, focusing entirely on her own wellbeing and the love surrounding her.
