Desiree Reyes, a Texas resident, was walking her dogs Knox and Coal in her neighborhood on a hot day when she encountered a heartbreaking scene.
There was a dog she had never seen before who was gazing from the fenced yard of her neighbors’ home. He was pleading with her to notice him.
The sorrowful look in his eyes broke her heart. She was concerned that the Cocker Spaniel lived outside all the time, exposed to all the elements.
Trying To Help The Heartbroken Pup

Reyes remembered that she had seen another dog living outside a couple of years ago in the same yard. He stayed outside regardless of the weather.
At the time, she asked the couple to take their dog inside, but unfortunately, they refused.
However, a few weeks later, the dog didn’t go outside anymore, and Reyes hoped that his family finally realized that he should live inside.
When she saw the sorrowful Cocker Spaniel, she started having her doubts.
“When I saw another dog in the garden again, I knew … the plans were for this dog to remain outside. We had been experiencing 90-degree [Fahrenheit] days in Houston, and it wasn’t even the peak of summer,” Desiree Reyes told The Dodo.
Reyes wished to help the dog with her whole heart, but she felt powerless.
She talked to him and promised to check up on him every day.

The kind woman kept her promise.
Every morning when she walked by the house, she saw the dejected Cocker Spaniel standing in the yard, gazing at the world around him.
Reyes brought him treats and the pup loved them. He realized that she was his friend and he would rush to greet her, wagging his tail.
As days became hotter, the woman grew more concerned about the Cocker Spaniel who was constantly outside.
Reyes was desperate to help him, so she taped a note to the front door, pleading with the owners to follow the state laws about dogs requiring proper shelter, but nothing changed.
Freedom At Last

When a big storm was approaching, Reyes noticed that the dog became more frightened and she knocked on the family’s door.
The owner answered the door and admitted that the dog wasn’t allowed indoors. Reyes asked them if they would like to give him up so that she could find him a better home, they agreed.
Reyes breathed a sigh of relief and took the dog with her.

The dog whose name was Benny, was the picture of happiness when his rescuer brought him home. He couldn’t stop wagging his tail with excitement.
Reyes reached out to Tracey Cline, the founder of Rescue Texas who agreed to help Benny.

She scanned him for a microchip and learned who his original owners were.
She contacted them and found out that they bought him when he was a puppy. When he was around two years old, they rehomed him because he had ‘too much energy’.
Benny’s owners couldn’t take him and give him the home he deserved.
Reyes was delighted with Benny and decided to foster him.

She partnered with Cocker Spaniel Rescue of East Texas (CockerKids) so that they could help him find his perfect match.
Benny rediscovered happiness while staying in his foster home. He burst with energy and loved playing with his foster siblings, Knox and Coal.

“Now, he’s a completely different dog. His spirit lit up almost overnight. He loves to zoom around with his little stuffies, and honestly, he retrieves better than my retrievers,” Reyes added.
I have no doubt that such a loving pup would soon meet his forever family, who will give him unconditional love and treat him like treasure.
