Most dog owners try to protect their pets from every possible danger, but sometimes curiosity moves faster than caution.
That was what happened to Rilee on her family’s property in Placerville, California. One moment, she was exploring. The next, she had wandered into an abandoned mine shaft and slipped into a vertical borehole far below the surface.
For her mom, Kimberlee Adams Norwood Mickelson, there was no time to freeze.
She was shaken, terrified, and desperate to get Rilee out, but she acted immediately. The second she realized what had happened, she called for help.
Firefighters Launch A Risky Mission To Save Rilee
The El Dorado County Fire Protection District responded quickly after receiving Mickelson’s urgent plea.
When they arrived, they discovered Rilee had fallen 60 feet after roaming nearly 200 yards into the old shaft.
“Our firefighters have responded to dogs that have fallen down into open mine shafts before, but nothing this extensive or serious,” El Dorado County Fire Protection District captain Jacob Poganski told The Dodo.
The crew began planning their approach. The task was dangerous and complex, but their training had prepared them for such challenges.
“Crews performed a permit-required confined space entry and lowered a rescuer to the dog using rope systems,” they wrote in a Facebook post about the rescue that lasted just over an hour.
As the rescuer descended, Rilee was anxious at first. Everything shifted once she realized someone had come to help.
“The dog was extremely anxious as the rescuer approached and then was calm and friendly when she realized there was someone there to help her,” Jacob said.
Rilee remained cooperative as the rescuer secured a harness around her, making the lift far smoother.
Thanks to her calmness and the team’s precision, the operation concluded successfully.
“The dog was secured and brought up to the surface without issue,” El Dorado County Fire Protection District confirmed proudly.
Gratitude Turns The Rescue Into A Miracle
Once Rilee was lifted back to safety, she immediately showed her appreciation.
“Once the dog emerged from the mine, she happily greeted all of the rescuers individually, as if to say, ‘Thank you!’” Poganski said.
Even more remarkable, she escaped with only minor injuries. Her mom, overwhelmed with relief, expressed her gratitude.
“I’m forever grateful for the effort, care, and concern these guys had and for risking their own to save my Rilee!” she wrote in a Facebook post. “Miracles do happen! She’s ALIVE!!!”
For the firefighters, seeing Rilee safe and her mom filled with joy was the greatest reward.
Despite the risks and challenges, the successful outcome was proof of why they dedicate themselves to saving lives.
