For years, people have believed curiosity belongs to cats. They are usually the ones sneaking around, poking their whiskers where they shouldn’t.
This time, though, another furry friend let his curiosity get the better of him.
A dog in Colorado began roaming through his house one morning, exploring every corner, but when he made it to the kitchen, his actions nearly put his entire family in danger.
One Pup’s Curiosity Sparks Trouble
While nosing around the kitchen, the pup spotted a few boxes sitting on the stovetop. Convinced they might hide something tasty, he stood up on his hind legs like a human and sniffed at them.
In doing so, one of his paws accidentally pressed a stove knob and turned it on.
As the burner heated up, the boxes soon caught fire. Frightened by the sudden flames, the pup bolted from the kitchen.
Fortunately, his family owned an Apple HomePod that quickly sent out a “High Heat” alert, waking them right away.
One of the owners rushed to investigate, only to be met with the shocking sight of flames spreading across the kitchen.
He grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the fire before contacting the Colorado Police Department.
Fire Department Steps In
“Upon investigation, crews did not find any active fire but did find evidence of a fire. The male homeowner was able to extinguish the fire before crews got there but was later transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported to people or pets,” the Colorado Springs Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post.
Curious to know what caused the fire, the family checked their security cameras, which showed the entire incident.
“We determined their pup got a bit curious and accidentally switched on the oven, which had some boxes on top of it,” they added.
Thankfully, no one was harmed, and the incident served as an important reminder never to leave items on the stovetop.
The fire department used the moment to share vital safety advice: an accident like this one can be prevented if necessary measures are taken.
“This is a good reminder to always have working smoke alarms inside and outside every sleeping area and on every floor of the home, ensure all combustibles are away from your stovetop/oven, and know two ways out of every room in your home in the event of a fire,” they concluded.
It was a relief that both the pup and his family made it out safely that day. Still, it’s certain the little dog discovered one lesson for himself: curiosity is best left to cats.
