“You think you know someone…” That feeling hits hard when you believe you have finally brought home the exact dog you always dreamed of, only to learn later that the story is not quite what you thought.
That was the experience of Annalise, a Minnesota dog owner who adopted a beautiful pup named Rinka. Convinced she was welcoming an Irish Setter into her life, Annalise looked forward to watching her puppy grow into the tall, elegant dog she had admired for years.
Months passed, then a full year, and Rinka never reached the size Annalise expected. Instead of towering over other dogs, she stayed noticeably small.
That was the moment curiosity turned into confusion, and Annalise began to wonder if something had been overlooked.
A Puzzle That Took Time To Solve

In a TikTok video, Annalise explained that during Rinka’s first year, she believed her pup was a standard Irish Setter.
She expected her to grow close to 30 inches tall and assumed a dramatic growth spurt was right around the corner. That moment never arrived.
Rather than growing taller, Rinka settled into a slim, athletic frame. She was energetic, fast, and eager to move, showing all the personality traits Annalise associated with the breed.
The only thing missing was the size. Eventually, Annalise learned the explanation that tied everything together.
Rinka was not a show Irish Setter. She was a field Irish Setter, a variation bred for stamina and agility rather than height.
“When we brought you home and didn’t know you were a field Irish setter for the first year and thought we had somehow forever stunted your growth,” the video text reads.
With that realization, Annalise finally felt relief. Nothing had gone wrong at all. Rinka was exactly the size she was meant to be.
“I genuinely believed that I had done something wrong because she wasn’t like all of the giant Irish Setters I saw everywhere,” Annalise wrote in the video description.
A Surprise Many Owners Recognized

The post quickly gained attention and drew comments from pet owners who had experienced similar misunderstandings. Many shared stories of dogs who turned out smaller or different than expected.
“That’s how I found out my Aussie was a mini Aussie. I was so confused like why aren’t you growing, nope you’re just the tiny version,” one commenter wrote.
“Hahaha this happened to me with a cocker spaniel. What I actually got was a cocker spaniel cross sausage dog. So he looks like a cocker spaniel with really short legs and a longish body,” another added.
Perfect Just the Way She Is

Despite the surprise, Rinka grew into everything Annalise hoped for in a companion. She is playful, affectionate, and full of enthusiasm. She enjoys long outings, keeps up easily with her German Shepherd sister, and thrives on activity.

The dogs often explore trails together, with Rinka showing no signs of slowing down.
Her field-setter energy fits Annalise’s lifestyle perfectly, turning everyday walks into lively adventures.
What began as confusion ended in appreciation. Rinka may not have been the giant Annalise expected, but she turned out to be exactly the dog she needed.
