Virginia Family Requests Euthanasia For Their Dog At The Vet, Then Something Amazing Happens

When Briton, a 12-year-old pup, arrived at the vet with his owner, he thought it was just another routine checkup.

He had been living with mobility issues and skin problems, but nothing could have prepared him for the real reason he was brought in. His owner told the veterinarian they wanted him put to sleep.

The vet’s response would change Briton’s life forever.

After examining Briton, the vet concluded that this senior still had more happy years ahead and urged his owner to reconsider.

When staff at the Richmond SPCA in Richmond, Virginia, learned what was happening, they stepped in. They explained to the owner that euthanasia wasn’t justified based on Briton’s condition. Eventually, the family agreed to surrender him instead of ending his life.

Tabitha Treloar, the Richmond SPCA’s director of communications, learned the family was moving and felt they couldn’t bring him along. She suspected they didn’t realize other options were available.

The shelter chose not to dwell on the circumstances or place blame. Instead, they welcomed Briton with open arms, determined to give him the care he deserved.

Upon arrival, their veterinary team noticed he often dragged the tops of his paws while walking. X-rays revealed intervertebral disc disease, along with arthritis in his shoulders, hips, and other joints. The team immediately began consulting specialists to find the most effective treatment for his condition.

Treating His Health Challenges

In addition to mobility concerns, Briton was battling severe skin problems. His skin was thickened, his coat had bald patches, and he was infested with fleas. The medical team got to work, treating his skin, removing growths, and addressing the flea issue.

Given how long he had suffered, it was unclear whether his fur would fully grow back. Daily topical treatments became part of his routine to soothe his skin and prevent further irritation.

Weighing in at 54 pounds, Briton was also put on a plan to lose some weight, which could help ease strain on his joints and improve mobility.

Gradually, his condition began to improve. Once the flea allergy was brought under control, his skin healed noticeably, and his energy levels rose.

Briton’s road to recovery took a big step forward when he was placed with Renai, a dedicated Richmond SPCA foster volunteer.

While he enjoys the affection and pampering his foster mom provides, what Briton really wants is a forever family.

Shelter staff believe he’d thrive in a home without stairs, and that having a ramp could help him get in and out of vehicles comfortably. They know that the right person will see beyond his age and health history to the loving companion he truly is.

Thanks to quick action from the vet, the intervention of the Richmond SPCA, and the care of his foster family, Briton now has a second chance at a joyful, comfortable life. Here’s hoping that the next chapter brings him the forever home he’s been waiting for.
