The dogs were taken to Genesee County Animal Control in Flint, Michigan, where the staff members were overcome with emotion as they saw the sisters’ condition.
No one could understand how anyone could treat such gentle souls with such cruelty, leaving them locked away and forgotten.
Determined to give them another chance, the shelter team immediately began caring for their physical injuries and emotional trauma.
When Toffee was first placed in her kennel, she appeared completely shut down. Curled up and motionless, she avoided all human contact. The pain and fear she had experienced were still visible in her eyes.
But then, everything started to change when Caramel was brought into the kennel next to her.
The moment Toffee saw her sister, her expression softened. Her tail gave a hesitant wag, and for the first time, she showed interest in the people caring for her.

She explained that Toffee wouldn’t be ready for adoption until she regained her strength and fully recovered.
