Everyone who works in animal rescue knows that shelter life is never meant to be permanent. It’s a safe place for dogs to rest, recover, and wait for their second chance, but it’s not a real home.
Shelter teams do everything they can to provide love and care, but they also know that every extra day a dog spends there can take an emotional toll.
Some dogs, especially those who are anxious or shy, struggle the most. Over time, the stress becomes unbearable, leading them to try anything just to feel free again.
That’s exactly what happened to Usopp, a dog at the Humane Society of Greater Miami, whose heartbreaking story left a volunteer in tears.
A Heartbreaking Struggle

When Usopp first arrived at the shelter, staff were hopeful he would adjust and eventually find a loving home. At first, he seemed to be doing all right. But as weeks turned into months, and months into years, his spirit began to fade.
Usopp is naturally timid and uncomfortable around strangers. He prefers quiet and familiarity, so the busy, noisy shelter environment has been especially hard for him.
Life inside his kennel offers little comfort, yet being outside of it is even more stressful for him. It’s a painful cycle that leaves him trapped in fear and confusion.

Whenever he is taken too far from his kennel, he panics and desperately tries to return. It’s heartbreaking to see him seek safety in the very space that also isolates him.
One day, Lindsay Kaplan, a volunteer at the shelter, witnessed something that moved her to tears. Usopp tried to climb the walls of his kennel, as if attempting to escape.
He couldn’t get out, but that act spoke volumes about how deeply he was struggling. Lindsay decided to record the moment, hoping that sharing his story might help him find the comfort he needs.
Sharing His Story With The World

Lindsay, who volunteers in Florida, posted the emotional video on her TikTok page raise awareness about Usopp’s situation. Her goal was to reach someone willing to give this gentle dog a real chance at happiness.
The video quickly gained attention, with viewers expressing sadness and frustration in the comments.
One person wrote: “It seems cruel to let them go this long in a kennel, the behaviors and trauma they develop in this environment will be so hard to undo and will make it hard to safely rehome them.”
It’s important to remember that shelters often face complex challenges. Despite appearances, the staff are likely doing everything possible to help Usopp feel safe and cared for.
Another viewer commented: “What a cruel type of enclosure where he can’t see out. He is trying to see what’s going on around him and get the attention of people passing by.”

Lindsay later explained that the kennel setup was actually designed to lower Usopp’s anxiety, since he becomes extremely fearful when too many people walk by.
A third commenter summed it up perfectly: “Please only adopt or foster this sweet boy if you are willing to put in the work to earn his trust and help him decompress. He’s a good boy, but he needs someone to meet him at his level. I know with kindness and patience he’ll be the best boy!”
Usopp’s story struck a chord with everyone who saw it. While he’s still waiting for a home, Lindsay hopes the video will help him connect with someone patient, understanding, and willing to help him heal.
He doesn’t need perfection, just a gentle person who will give him time, space, and love.
