When Arielle left Florida for North Carolina, she prepared for that stressful transition, but one thing made every place feel familiar and safe, no matter how far from home she was: her devoted dog, Gigi.
Starting Fresh With Her Constant Companion
Gigi, a five-year-old Chihuahua and Italian Greyhound mix, was far more than a cuddly friend. She had been Arielle’s emotional support through every difficult morning of her cancer journey, staying close during treatments and keeping her spirits lifted without ever needing to speak.

“When we got to the vet office, one of the techs came in, saying she needed to take a photo of Gigi,” Arielle said. “As she was taking the photo, Gigi gave her what I like to call her ‘iconic Gigi smile.’ Gigi smiles when she gets excited.”

“I knew Gigi was special the moment I met her, so it’s amazing how so many other people are seeing that as well,” Arielle told Newsweek.
As strangers online enjoyed the adorable grin, Arielle reflected on the real reason Gigi meant so much. Long before she ever went viral, this little dog had been her biggest source of comfort.
When Arielle received her cancer diagnosis at just 27 years old, Gigi stayed by her side through every appointment and every exhausting round of treatment. She became the soft reminder that life could still hold warmth, even during the toughest days.
“I’m a cancer patient, so having her in my life has made my treatments much more bearable,” Arielle said. “Dogs are such a gift—we are so lucky to have them in our lives. I am forever grateful for my Gigi and will keep sharing how great she is with the world.”
