It’s well understood that rescue dogs need to be placed in permanent homes as soon as possible. While it’s a relief that they’re safe, well-fed, and surrounded by caring shelter staff, that environment is only meant to be temporary.
The rescuers know this, which is why they work tirelessly every day to help each dog find the right family.
Still, challenges remain. Some pups struggle to get adopted, and the emotional toll can be so overwhelming that they attempt to escape the shelter altogether.
That’s exactly what happened to Usopp when he arrived at the Humane Society of Greater Miami. What followed was a truly heartbreaking chapter in his life.
This Story Is Truly Heartbreaking

When Usopp first arrived at the shelter, things quickly turned difficult. Though he seemed okay in the beginning, time started to wear on him, leaving him anxious and overwhelmed.
On top of that, Usopp isn’t particularly outgoing around people. He tends to be quite nervous and shy.
That means life outside his kennel is hard, but being inside isn’t much better either. Unfortunately, this leaves the poor pup constantly under stress.

Anytime Usopp strays too far from his kennel, he shuts down and desperately tries to return, which is incredibly sad to watch.
Lindsay Kaplan, a volunteer at the shelter, caught a particularly emotional moment when she saw Usopp attempting to climb the kennel walls to escape.
Though he couldn’t get out, that attempt made it clear just how much he was struggling, prompting Lindsay to capture the moment on video.
Hoping to Spread the Word

After recording the emotional moment, Lindsay, a Florida-based volunteer, uploaded the video to her TikTok channel hoping to raise awareness for Usopp.
She remains optimistic that someone might come forward to give him a new beginning. Unsurprisingly, the heart-wrenching clip quickly drew attention.
One person commented: “It seems cruel to let them go this long in a kennel, the behaviors and trauma they develop in this environment will be so hard to undo and will make it hard to safely rehome them.”
It’s important not to jump to conclusions in situations like this. We don’t fully know what’s happening behind the scenes, and it’s likely the shelter is doing everything possible for him. Sometimes, it’s just not easy.
Another person said: “What a cruel type of enclosure where he can’t see out. He is trying to see what’s going on around him and get the attention of people passing by.”

Again, context matters. According to Lindsay, Usopp is highly fearful of people passing near his space, and the setup is meant to reduce his anxiety.
Lastly, somebody commented: “Please only adopt or foster this sweet boy if you are willing to put in the work to earn his trust and help him decompress. He’s a good boy, but he needs someone to meet him at his level. I know with kindess and patience he’ll be the best boy!”
If nothing else, the video may help Usopp find someone who is both patient and dedicated. A foster home would be an ideal starting point. He just needs someone to give him a chance. Hopefully, that happens very soon.
