On the surface, Ziggy could easily pass for a youngster barely past his first year. His playful bounce and cheerful energy make it hard to imagine otherwise.
The truth, though, tells a different story. Ziggy is a rescue dog whose age is far beyond what most people assume, even though his behavior mirrors that of a lively pup just starting out in life.
Day after day, his spirited personality fools those around him. Strangers on the busy streets of New York often pause to admire him, trying to guess how old he might be. Their guesses rarely come close.
Only when his real age is revealed, along with the journey that carried him to where he is today, do people realize how remarkable Ziggy truly is.
A Second Chance For A Forgotten Dog
Like many mixed-breed dogs, Ziggy found himself in a shelter early on.
“I found Ziggy online, he had been turned in and abandoned in Texas at a shelter,” shared Ziggy’s mom in a Cuddle Buddies video. “And then he was sent up to Waggy Tail Rescue up here (New York) and placed with a wonderful foster family… I just knew we were meant to be.”
Life before adoption had taken a toll on him. Years of neglect left him in rough shape, and his thin, patchy coat was only one sign of what he had endured.
A vet visit revealed that he had hyperthyroidism, a condition that causes weight loss despite eating well, increased heart rate, restlessness, and other symptoms.
Once treatment began, which he will need for the rest of his life, Ziggy improved quickly. His coat thickened, his mood brightened, and his energy returned.
Despite his puppy-like appearance, Ziggy was ten years old by the time Isabelle officially adopted him.
“He really loves to explore and he loves watching the world. He loves observing everything and seeing all the action and smelling all the smells. And that was like the biggest transformation for me. I think I’m the luckiest in the world that I found him and that he chose me,” Isabelle said.
She gave a senior dog the chance to reclaim joy, and Ziggy showed her how deeply a rescued dog can impact a person’s life.
The Transformation No One Expected
When Isabelle first met him, Ziggy was thin and frail. His coat was sparse, his tail had little fur, and his ears were nearly bare, all signs of long-term malnourishment.
But steady care changed everything. As he gained strength, his youthful appearance became so convincing that strangers routinely asked if he was still a puppy.
Despite his age, Ziggy embraced every new day with enthusiasm. Over time, he also worked through the fears caused by his difficult past. With patience and reassurance, he revealed a sweet, affectionate side that had been buried beneath years of hardship.
Curious to learn more about his background, Isabelle ordered a DNA test. The results showed a unique combination of Maltese, Chihuahua, Yorkie, Australian Cattle Dog, and Pomeranian.
