Knowing how dogs live in the shelter always makes me feel both hopeful and sad. On one hand, they are getting the help they need.
However, it’s not that simple. A stay in the shelter is never a permanent solution. Rescuers always work to help them find a home, but some just struggle with finding a perfect family.
That’s why it can be really mentally taxing for most dogs to stay in rescue organizations for prolonged periods of time.
Some lose hope and patience, while others handle it a lot better. This pup from Mississippi was a very patient and good boy who spent a very long time in the shelter, even though his rescuers hoped to find a home for him sooner.
Mars’ Difficult Journey

When the animal control officer from Webster Animal Shelter first found Mars, he was roaming the streets of Mississippi, with a severely swollen face covered in abscesses.
The pup was very scared and didn’t really like people at first, but that changed after he was rescued. Since then, it has been over 1,200 days.
This sweet pup is now at the very least 4 or 5 years old, and he has stayed in the shelter for too long. The rescuers tried their best to find a family for him, but it was a struggle.

They were also baffled by this fact. They couldn’t understand why this pup was their longest resident, even though he was a very good boy.
The theory was that he was overlooked for so long because of his color and breed. Pit bull type-dogs are generally associated with aggressive behavior even though it’s not true.
Dark-colored dogs are also perceived as more intimidating and so people usually avoid them for that reason.
He Is A Very Good Boy

That’s not true for Mars, though. He is a very lovable dog and there is no doubt that he would get along with most people very easily.
He would fit in best in a household that doesn’t have cats. He is okay with some dogs, but it would be better if he were the only dog in the home.
His best qualities are that he is extremely patient and very playful. Anytime you need someone to cheer you up, Mars would be there for you in an instant.

After trying for so long, the Mississippi rescuers posted his story on their social media, and it gained a lot of attention. Many people reached out with words of encouragement and support.
However, some even offered to adopt this beautiful pup. This made his rescuers extremely happy because he finally had a chance after all this time.
When everything was finalized, Mars was officially adopted by a wonderful family and is now living his best life with someone truly amazing.
