Dog Who Flunked Service School In California Found His Own Way To Help In Colorado

Leo has always gone through life in his own unmistakable way, and the people around him are constantly amused by it.

There was only one milestone he never quite reached. He never earned the official title of service dog.

His mom laughs about it and says this lovable English Lab “failed” the program because “the standards were too high.”

The trainers noticed pretty quickly that Leo had other ideas. Instead of putting that bright mind into strict, step-by-step work, he preferred using it for little goals of his own.

In the end, it never really felt disappointing. Leo found the place where he truly belongs, supporting his mom in a way that fits exactly who he is.

Leo spent two years working through the Paws for Purple Hearts program, a California-based organization that trains service dogs. When it became clear he would not graduate, he was placed withSamantha Welborn, who became his permanent family.

His “flunk” never erased what he learned. Leo still uses many of those skills every day, although he tends to add his own interpretation.

One of his self-appointed duties is helping Sam get ready for their outings. He darts around collecting socks, shoes, and other bits of clothing, carrying them to her as if he is trying to get the day moving faster.

“I adopted him when he didn’t pass service dog school, he loves to bring me my things when he wants a walk,” Sam wrote in a video.

There are times he returns with things he probably should have left alone, but that is simply part of who he is.Sam knows how intelligent he is and accepts that he occasionally adjusts the rules to suit his plans.

If he decides he is not in a helpful mood, he will stretch out and pretend to sleep, although the slightly open eyes usually give away the act.

When he wants something, he finds a way to make sure Sam understands.

A Partner Who Understands Her

Despite all his quirks, Sam cherishes everything about Leo. She knows exactly how perceptive he is and appreciates the personal way he shows it.

“Leo might have flunked out of service dog school, but he’s still the smartest dog I know,” Sam shared on TikTok.

They spend much of their time exploring together, often setting out on mountain hikes or long walks.

“Leo is the best adventure buddy,” Sam wrote in another TikTok post.

When the two are not out adventuring, they relax in their Colorado home. Leo also supports Sam emotionally, stepping in whenever she is overwhelmed or low, always managing to bring back her smile.

He may not have earned an official certification, but Sam considers him her service dog all the same. He stays beside her, ready to help in the way only he knows how.
