Finding a home for a shelter pup is never easy. Many families often focus on young dogs and overlook the older ones.
This makes the job very challenging for shelter workers. They always try to find homes for senior dogs, but sometimes their efforts don’t succeed.
In those moments, spreading the word and sharing a dog’s story on social media can be their last chance of giving them hope.
Smokey’s Long Wait
Smokey’s case was no different. He was brought to the Pennsylvania SPCA, and at first, everyone believed it would not take long before he found a family.
He seemed sweet right away and loved being around people. Although he was underweight when he arrived, that changed quickly.
With the right food and care, Smokey soon turned into a strong and handsome dog. Once he was healthy again, the search for his new home began.
That is when the difficulties started. SPCA wrote in a post on Facebook: “Smokey has spent almost four years looking for a home. In his 40 months of waiting, only a handful of people have asked about him.”
The staff grew worried. Nothing they tried seemed to work. Despite their efforts, no one came forward for him.
Everyone there knew he wasn’t at fault. He was affectionate and would make someone truly happy if given a chance.
Hoping For His Forever Family
One volunteer told The Dodo: “I love his fierce loyalty. He looks at me with such devotion, and he’ll frequently check in by looking back at me when we’re on walks. He’s also gorgeous, with his deep black fur with rich brown highlights.”
The volunteer also explained Smokey’s favorite things. He enjoys long walks in quiet areas and exploring new places. He also likes tug and fetch games.
The team is looking for a home that would suit him best. He can live in either rural or urban settings, though a quieter place may make him happiest.
While he likes other dogs, the staff believe Smokey would do best as the only dog in a household.
No one knows exactly what the future holds for him, but the Pennsylvania SPCA is still hopeful. They want to see him spend the rest of his life with someone who loves him.
At the end of the post, they wrote: “Smokey has so much love to give – and it is pure. After waiting for so long, it’s time a forever family gives him the same.”
