When it comes to adopting a dog, there’s one rule that should never be overlooked: every pup needs time to adjust. Settling into a new home takes patience, and without it, things can go wrong quickly.
Sadly, not every dog gets that chance. Matcha, a sweet pup in Michigan, experienced heartbreak when his new owners returned him to the shelter only ten minutes after adoption.
Just as it seemed his story was finally taking a joyful turn, everything changed in an instant.
The Fastest Return Ever

The Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL) recently shared two emotional adoption stories featuring their residents, Matcha and Trudge.
Trudge, a playful Bouvier mix rescued from another shelter, finally found a family after 120 days in care. Everyone at MARL was overjoyed until three days later, he was returned because his adopters said he was “too much to handle.”

At that point, Trudge’s short-lived adoption seemed to set a record for the fastest return. But then came Matcha.
Matcha, a Shih Tzu mix, had already been surrendered once for “not being a good fit.” When he was chosen again, he seemed thrilled at the thought of a second chance. Yet only minutes later, his adopters walked back through the doors, citing a “change of heart.”
The reason? Matcha’s fecal test results had arrived during the adoption, showing he needed a short course of medication. That was enough for the family to abandon the adoption, leaving the staff deeply saddened.
“Our client based adoption process is designed to set both the animal and adopter up for success, but sometimes things just don’t work out,” MARL explained.
It was particularly hard to accept, as Matcha had always been known for his gentle and affectionate personality.
“This handsome pup is the perfect blend of mellow and playful,” the shelter shared in a separate post.
Unlike energetic Trudge, Matcha was the kind of dog who loved to cuddle, enjoy calm walks, and spend quiet time with his people.
Matcha Finally Finds His Family

While the return was disheartening, it was not the end of Matcha’s story.
The rescue already had several applications waiting, and it did not take long for the right family to come along. Just one day later, Matcha went home with adopters who were ready to give him the love and care he truly deserved.

Trudge, however, is still waiting for his forever family. He is a 100-pound goofball, best suited for an active household with plenty of space for fun and adventure.
“This goofy guy is full of energy and enthusiasm, always ready to turn any moment into a fun adventure. Whether he’s chasing toys, making new friends, or just being his charming self, Trudge is sure to keep you laughing,” MARL wrote on Instagram.
Known for his love of squeaky toys and zoomies, Trudge continues to brighten the shelter with his spirit. The staff hopes he will soon find the perfect home, just as Matcha did.
