The job of a dog rescuer isn’t easy, but it is an immensely rewarding experience to see a pup who was once in need thrive after a successful rescue mission.
Kelly Russel and her fellow volunteers at a Texas rescue group knew this, so when they received a disturbing call about a dog stuck in a tire, they immediately rushed into action.
Found near a rodeo, the dog had been in a dangerous situation for a few days, barely staying alive. He couldn’t move properly, his head was swollen, and he desperately needed help.
He Desperately Needed Help
Kelly, a volunteer at Three Little Pitties Rescue in Texas, was barely able to hold her tears the first time she saw the pup, conveniently named Pickles. He had barely survived the last several days with his head stuck in a tire, with no way out.
“He was really in distress. He was fearful. They think he might have been chasing a squirrel or something and got his head stuck like that,” Kelly told The Dodo.
Given his fearful nature, Kelly and the team carefully sedated the pup and took him to the vet.
Within hours, Pickles was on the table waiting to be removed from the tire. The only problem was – it couldn’t be done without extra help.
The team urgently contacted the fire department, which immediately responded to the call. Although pretty shaken by the scene, the officers knew exactly what to do. They used the jaws of life to cut through the rim – and within minutes, Pickles was finally free.
“They had never seen anything like it before either, and used the jaws of life to break the tire rim off. And an hour later, he was freed. He woke up several hours later really confused, but he seemed to be grateful that the tire was gone,” Kelly added.
Being awake for the first time in days without a heavy tire around his neck meant the world to Pickles. He was still shy and reserved toward people, but now, he was also relieved and ready to start a new chapter of his life.

After spending a few days in vet care, Pickles was taken in by Kelly as a foster. Needless to say, it was the best decision ever made!
Within just a few days, he started to adapt to his new environment, socialize with other dogs, and trust people. Little by little, Pickle finally learned all about being a dog in a loving home surrounded by friends. And, not only did he love it, but he stole everyone’s hearts within days.
Pickles was the epitome of a cuddle bug and a gentle soul – the traits perfect for a pet looking for a home. He left his sorrowful past behind and started a brand-new journey thanks to Kelly.
Now, the only thing left for this sweet canine was to find a suitable family.
The good news was – Pickles didn’t have to wait long.
A few months later, he was successfully adopted into an amazing family who welcomed him with open arms. He continued to thrive next to his new hoomans, leaving his life on the streets and all the bad memories behind.
Today, Pickles’ life is all about love, endless play, and exciting adventures, and he sure deserves it all!
