When you look into the eyes of a shelter dog, you can never be sure what kind of story lies behind the sadness.
Rhoudy, a three-year-old Terrier mix, arrived at the Greenville Humane Society in South Carolina like any other intake. At first glance, he seemed like just another pup in need of a home. But everything changed when staff discovered a small handwritten note tucked in with his belongings.
It was a child’s drawing accompanied by a message so sincere and heartfelt that it brought the entire team to tears.
A Message That Moved Everyone

Though little was known about Rhoudy’s past, the note that came with him was one of the most touching things his new caregivers had ever seen.
It was clear that his family had made the difficult decision to surrender him. But some of the children in the household couldn’t let go without expressing their love. The note read:
“We love you Rhoudy. I will miss you, Rhoudy. But you’re going home! And I hope your people love you as much as I do,”.

Once Rhoudy settled into the shelter, volunteers tried to reach out to his former family. Unfortunately, they were unable to make contact.
Instead, the team responded in the only way they could by posting a message on social media, hoping the children might one day see it.
“We know how hard it was to say goodbye. But you were so brave and so strong. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made, but he knows how much you love him,” GHS wrote in a Facebook post.
The message quickly spread online, touching hearts across the country. And while the story was filled with sadness, it also brought comfort. Rhoudy was now surrounded by people who cared deeply for him.
“He’s doing so good. He’s gone for lots of walks and has all of the toys you brought him in his bed. He’s being given so much love. Yes, he misses you. But he will always love you. Don’t you ever forget that, OK,” the South Carolina rescue added.
A Dog With Energy And Heart Still Waiting For A Home

Though Rhoudy’s journey began with heartbreak, he is now safe thanks to the team that welcomed him in.
He’s no longer just another dog behind a kennel door. His personality has begun to shine, and the staff have seen his playful, spirited side. Still, what Rhoudy needs most is a permanent home.
He’s full of energy and loves to play with other dogs. He thrives on attention and enjoys being in the center of it all.

“I’m a bit of a rough and tumble kind of guy and I love to play and rough house with other dogs… I’m looking for a family who will give me lots of love and attention, and who will keep me active and engaged,” the rescue wrote on their website.
Rhoudy continues to wait for the family who will see him for the lively, affectionate dog he truly is. And when that day comes, they’ll be gaining a companion who has already shown how deeply he can love.
