Shelters are meant to be temporary safe havens for dogs, but sadly, some end up spending most of their lives behind kennel doors, holding onto the hope that one day, someone will finally choose them.
Lucia was one of those dogs. For eleven long years, she watched countless other pups leave for their forever homes, yet she remained, still waiting for her turn.
Many dogs in her situation would lose hope, but not Lucia. She held on, believing that her special day would come. Little did she know her day would come when she least expected.
Life Behind Shelter Walls
Lucia arrived at Villalobos Rescue Center in Louisiana when she was just a year old.
The staff welcomed her warmly, offering love and comfort, determined to help her move on from what they suspected was a difficult start in life.
Among those who met her was Liz Scollo, a dog trainer at the shelter. She couldn’t understand why no one had adopted this sweet girl.
The team tried everything — posting about her, introducing her at adoption events — but Lucia was always overlooked. Scollo guessed that her dislike of other dogs might have been the reason people kept passing her by.
Still, after more than a decade of waiting, a twist of fate finally brought her the home she’d been dreaming of. Scollo herself fell in love with Lucia and decided to adopt her. Something about this dog was so special, and before she knew it, a bond formed between them.
When Lucia realized she was leaving the shelter for good, she was overjoyed. She bid farewell to the staff who had been her family for so many years, stepping into a brand-new chapter.
It was such a big step for this sweet furry girl. And, without a doubt, she sure deserved to take it!
Discovering Freedom And Love
Moving into Scollo’s home was pure bliss for Lucia. With her tail wagging non-stop, she explored every corner, sniffing around and hopping onto couches with the biggest smile on her face.
After eleven years behind bars, she was experiencing a whole new world.
Now living in New York, twelve-and-a-half-year-old Lucia acts like a dog half her age. She runs around the yard, reveling in her newfound freedom, and showers her mom with affection — especially during cuddle time in bed.
Scollo hopes Lucia’s journey will inspire more people to consider adopting senior dogs, reminding them that older pups have just as much love and joy to give.
Thanks to Scollo’s compassion, Lucia’s long wait is finally over. She’s living the happy, love-filled life she always deserved.
