Texas Dog Spends Over 2,500 Days At Shelter Watching His Friends Being Adopted

It’s hard to tell why some dogs are constantly overlooked at shelters.

Although friendly, affectionate and without a mean bone in his body, there’s just something that keeps these four-legged beauties from getting a real shot at happiness. And it’s truly heartbreaking!

Naco, a friendly American Pit Bull Terrier mix, is definitely one of those dogs. This resilient pup spent over 2,500 days at a Texas shelter, hoping that one day, one of the people arriving to meet their future companion would be his person.

Overlooked For No Good Reason

Naco arrived at Animal Defense League of Texas seven years ago as a stray. He had no injuries, no microchip and was only a pup searching for a new chance.

He adapted to shelter life in no time. His all-time favorite activity was sunbathing and relaxing next to hoomans, which made him the ultimate lap dog, even though he’s a 70-pound boi.

Still, time passed, and no one showed interest in adopting Naco…not even after 2,500 days.

“Naco has been at ADL for 2,516 days… far too long for such a wonderful boy,” Animal Defense League of Texas shared in a Facebook post.

Even after seven years, the shelter couldn’t understand why people ignored this affectionate pup. Naco had a strong pull on the leash and was a bully breed, but that was no different than other dogs who already found their homes.

On top of everything, Naco was people-oriented and had no trouble with other dogs. He was the perfect adoption material!

“He is a relaxed, go with the flow kind of guy who loves sunny spots, snacks, and hanging out with his favorite people. He has wonderful fetch skills and he shakes toys like a pro wrestler,” the Texas shelter added.

Sadly, all he could do all those years was sit and watch other pups get adopted. Naco, as always, was overlooked by everyone.

“Seven years is a long time to wait. Naco has watched hundreds of other dogs come and go, always wondering when it will be his turn,” ADL wrote.

His only outings into the real world were on weekends. The volunteer working at the shelter agreed to help Naco experience life in a home, far away from the shelter.

During those days, Naco would enjoy the simple pleasures of life, such as lying on a sofa, walkies or simply enjoying cuddles from his volunteer. But after the weekend, he would have to return to the shelter.

Given Naco’s age and the fact that he hadn’t received a single application in seven years, the shelter staff almost gave up hope that this pup would ever find a home. Then, something amazing happened!

Finally, His 7-Year Wait Is Over

Thanks to his story being shared over and over again, Naco’s situation finally reached the right person. After so many years, a man finally reached out to the shelter, filling out an application for Naco.

In an emotional post on Facebook, Animal Defense League of Texas shared the most heartwarming update: Naco has finally found a forever home.

“Naco is finally going HOME! Thank you to everyone who shared his story, rooted for him, and showed him love through the years. His 7-year wait is over, and now he gets to start the life he always deserved,” ADL wrote.

It was a tear-jerking moment for everyone. Naco’s volunteers couldn’t hide their excitement and gratitude at finally seeing this big boi start a new life journey. After so many years of waiting, Naco was on his way to a new home. It was so rewarding!

From now on, Naco’s days will be all about joy. He replaced his kennel with a spacious yard, awaiting exciting sunbathing adventures along the way. As he truly deserves!

Good luck, Naco! May your days be filled with love, laughter and endless fun!
