Dog Rescued From High-Euthanasia Shelter In California Breaks Hearts With Her Backstory

Encountering abandoned dogs wandering the streets has, sadly, become an all-too-common sight. For true animal lovers, nothing is more heartbreaking, but not everyone sees it that way.

The responsibility for such suffering lies with people—those without compassion or conscience. What makes it even worse is that much of the cruelty dogs endure often goes unnoticed, hidden from public view.

The story of one Pit Bull Terrier named Olive, rescued from a euthanasia shelter in Downey, California, is a devastating reminder of the abuse so many dogs are forced to endure.

Heartbreaking Story

Sandy Dog Rescue, a nonprofit based in Santa Monica, California, is dedicated to pulling dogs from shelters where euthanasia is a daily reality.

One day, their team intervened at the SEAACA shelter in Downey and managed to save Olive, a Pit Bull Terrier who had only moments left. Their joy at rescuing her quickly turned to sorrow once they discovered the depth of her tragic past.

Shelter staff explained what they had noticed when she first arrived, and their words painted a grim picture.

“She was dropped off at the shelter while still lactating, without any of her babies,” a Sandy Dog Rescue spokesperson told Newsweek.

This heartbreaking detail revealed that Olive had been relentlessly used for breeding before being separated from her puppies, a traumatic fate for any mother.

But that was only part of her suffering. There were further disturbing signs etched into her body. “Her teeth were filed down,” the shelter noted. “So she was likely a bait dog.”

For those unfamiliar, a “bait dog” is often a young, defenseless animal used as a target for aggressive dogs in training to fight. They are forced to endure repeated attacks with no chance of defending themselves.

Thinking about what Olive must have endured is gut-wrenching. What’s harder still is coming to terms with the fact that such cruelty exists at all. Tragically, it does, but fortunately, so do people willing to fight for a better future for dogs like Olive.

All She Wanted Was To Be Loved

When Olive first entered the shelter, she was paralyzed with fear. Considering the abuse she had endured, her terror was no surprise.

Yet little by little, she began to heal. Every day brought small signs of progress, helped along by the kindness and care of her rescuers. Despite all she had been through, Olive showed nothing but love toward those who helped her. At the same time, she was clearly yearning for affection in return.

“She looked to any human who would give her the time of day for some reassurance,” the shelter said.

Her recovery has not been easy. Olive required surgery to repair an injured jaw and endured a tough healing process. Thankfully, during this time she was cared for by a compassionate foster family who ensured she had everything she needed to feel safe.

Still, as grateful as she was for their affection, what Olive longed for most was the permanence of a forever home.

According to Petfinder, “Olive is dog and kid friendly. She is also potty trained. She is learning to be alone for short periods at a time. She loves being with her human and following them around the house. She is so so sweet, gentle and quiet.”

After years of relentless suffering at the hands of heartless individuals, Olive now deserves the exact opposite: love, stability, and joy. With the right family, her life could finally be transformed into the blessing she’s been waiting for.
