New York Dog Rescued From A Closet Begins To Heal When He Reunites With Old Friends

Sammie entered the world like any other puppy, longing for affection and a place to belong.

But his life, along with dozens of other German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois, took a heartbreaking turn. Instead of growing up in a loving home, Sammie was confined to a small apartment, never allowed to step outside.

A negligent breeder had crammed the dogs into closets and cupboards. With no room to stretch or breathe freely, Sammie suffered the most. He became so emotionally withdrawn that he couldn’t even move.

Paralyzed By Fear And Isolation

When Animal Care Centers of New York City received a report about forty dogs living in horrific conditions, they responded immediately. But what they discovered was worse than expected.

“The dogs – ranging from young puppies to fullygrown adults – had allegedly never been outside prior to their rescue. Some were discovered inside closets and cupboards or packed into tight spaces with no access to fresh air or sunlight,” ACC stated.

Unable to take all the dogs at once, ACC contacted Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue for assistance. The group agreed to take ten dogs, including Sammie. His condition left the team especially shaken.

Sammie was so overwhelmed by fear that he couldn’t lift his head. He refused to move. Rescuers couldn’t walk him with a leash, so they wrapped him in a blanket and gently wheeled him to the car on a cart.

Sloane Quealy, co-founder of the New York rescue, tried comforting him with soft words and gentle touches, but Sammie remained unresponsive.

He stayed motionless for the rest of the day. Quealy began to worry that his legs had weakened from lack of use.

Given his fragile state, the team brought Sammie to a training facility where he could decompress for a month. They hoped he’d regain the strength to stand. What happened next moved everyone deeply.

Healing Begins With Familiar Faces

Sammie’s breakthrough came when he saw a few puppies who had been rescued from the same apartment. As they raced around the yard, Sammie’s demeanor changed. He perked up and joined them.

It was as if he finally understood he was safe.

“His soul may have been bruised, but he is on his way to healing. After he saw the pups Sammie let out the biggest sigh and laid down next to them. We knew at that very moment he knew he was safe and loved,” ZMAR wrote on Instagram.

Within days, Sammie was a different dog. He stopped hiding and freezing in fear. Instead, he played with the puppies and sought out affection from his caregivers.

Thanks to the rescuers who reunited him with familiar companions, Sammie began to rebuild his life.

After spending a month at the training center, Sammie will be ready for adoption. His ideal home should include experienced German Shepherd owners, a spacious yard, and perhaps another dog to keep him company.

After everything Sammie has endured, he deserves nothing less than a life filled with love and peace.
