Too many dogs lose their homes when families cannot afford their care, and they often end up abandoned on the streets.
The dog in today’s story went through the same heartbreaking experience. Thanks to the dedication of her local shelter, she and her mom were granted another chance to be together.
A Dog Carrying A Note On Her Leash
While wandering the streets of Tennessee in search of safety, a dog named Lilo was found by a kindhearted passerby who refused to let her spend another night outside.
Lilo was brought to McKamey Animal Center (MAC), where she finally received comfort and attention. Tied to her leash was a note explaining her circumstances.
The note read:
My name is Lilo. Please love me. My mom can’t keep me and is homeless with 2 kids. She tried her best, but can’t get help. I cost too much for her. She really loves me & I’m a great dog & love to be loved on. Please don’t abuse me.
The staff at MAC were deeply touched by the message and could not stop thinking about Lilo’s mom. Wanting to reach her, they shared a heartfelt post on Facebook.
We are so sorry that you had to make the decision to leave [Lilo] behind. We know many folks are struggling to care for their pets right now. We know how hard it must be to give up an animal you so clearly loved because you can’t provide the care she needs. We understand. We want you to know she is safe, and we will take the very best care of her. She will be loved by our staff and volunteers, we will keep her name, and we promise you we will do our best to find her a wonderful new home. But, if you are reading this, we hope you will come forward to reclaim her. We will help you with whatever you need to care for her, to the best of our ability. Lilo definitely misses you, and we would like nothing more than to see her go back to the family she loves. Either way, please know that we understand, we will not judge, and we are here to help in any way we can.
Only a few days later, the post reached Lilo’s mom, who was able to reunite with her cherished pup.
Shelter Provides A Second Chance
The way she clutched Lilo made it clear how much love remained between them and how painful it had been to let her go.
The compassionate team at MAC offered to continue caring for Lilo until her mom could get back on her feet and provide for her again.
Inspired by Lilo’s case, the shelter also launched a special fund to assist families facing homelessness or financial struggles so they could remain with their pets.
The Law On Animal Abandonment
Lilo’s family is not alone. Many people are forced to leave their pets when financial hardship becomes overwhelming.
Abandoning an animal is illegal, but more importantly, it should never have to be an option, MAC wrote.
Yes, in case you didn’t know, it is illegal to abandon your pet. Each state has its own anti-cruelty laws, and resources exist online to help pet owners understand the regulations where they live.
