Starving Dog Left In A Wire Crate Was Barely Clinging To Life Until Pennsylvania Rescuers Came To Her Aid

Being an animal rescuer is a rewarding mission, yet it comes with countless heartbreaks. You never know when you’re about to encounter a starving dog, a fading pup, or a four-legged furball on the edge. And that, most certainly, is the hardest part!

When rescuers first saw Lexi, she was close to being a lost cause. She was barely moving in her tiny crate, lying helplessly on blankets left behind by a previous owner who abandoned her.

Lexi knew nothing but pain and suffering until her saviors showed her the other side of life… the one she had only dreamed of.

“She Weighed Just 18 Pounds”

Animal control officers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, witnessed a shocking sight when they first found Lexi. She was lying completely motionless in a tiny crate after her owner abandoned her.

She was immediately rushed to vet care, as her body temperature was dangerously low.

“Lexi was emaciated – she weighed just 18 pounds. Her temperature was dangerously low, and her eyes were distant and vacant,” Pennsylvania SPCA stated in a Facebook post.

Thanks to Pennsylvania SPCA’s vet team, Lexi was successfully placed on IV fluids and given a transfusion to stabilize her. The vets began round-the-clock care and monitored her condition, giving this sweet girl a second chance.

Little by little, Lexi was finally able to lift her head. Only a few weeks after abandonment, she gained a little weight and began to walk around the facility.

It was truly rewarding to see this brave girl make her first steps after what could easily be described as the worst period of her life.

The vet team continued to monitor Lexi’s condition and fed her with small amounts of food. They suspected Lexi had a condition called megaesophagus, a disorder in which her tube that carries food loses its ability to move food into her stomach.

For days, she was fed in a special chair in an upright position, and she took it like the brave girl she is!

Lexi is truly the epitome of a fighter. She never gave up hope that better days would come, and in May 2025, her caregivers posted a wonderful update: Lexi, against all odds, was finally showing interest in toys.

“Just a few weeks ago, she could barely lift her head, but now she is walking on her own and is showing an interest in toys,” Pennsylvania SPCA wrote in the video.

The Moment We’ve All Been Waiting For

Only a week after her “toy update,” the Pennsylvania rescue warmed the hearts of their followers with the most amazing news: Lexi finally found her forever home!

“Today, we are smiling for Lexi, as she has officially been adopted. She’ll remain in the shelter a little while longer until she’s cleared for her spay surgery, but after that, it’s off to her forever home,” the rescue wrote in the post.

After all the storms in her life, including her traumatic past, Lexi, a resilient dog who beat all the odds, has found her happily ever after.

Today, this sweet pup is in a loving home surrounded by the family who loves her unconditionally. And, she couldn’t be happier!
