Dogs are abandoned on rural back roads every day, and this cruel reality just breaks my heart.
No protection, food, or even understanding of why the people they trusted vanished. Once they’re left, they’re left with emptiness.
Murdock was one of those dogs. This sweet pup was found standing alone on an isolated Illinois road, as if waiting for someone. And yes, that’s exactly what he had been doing.
After being dumped by his previous family, Murdock simply decided to stay and wait. Sadly, his owners never showed up again, leaving Murdock in heartbreak.
Loyal, Friendly, Hopeful
One of the first updates from Shining Light Animal Rescue (SLAR) about Murdock was truly devastating. According to the Illinois rescue, the dog was found roaming rural areas, with nothing but a pink collar on his neck.
Then, upon closer inspection, the rescuers realized something even more heartbreaking: Murdock was also mostly blind. It was reasonable to assume that he may have been abandoned after losing his eyesight, a cruel but common fate for dogs who require extra care.
“Murdock was found roaming rural West Frankfort, likely abandoned and trying to survive on his own. He was wearing a pink collar, has no chip, and appears to be mostly blind, though he may see shapes,” the Illinois rescue shared on Facebook.
The pup had clearly been out there for a while. He was covered in fleas, and perked up at every sound, as if trying to recognize a voice he still trusted.
Although his family never showed up, Murdock, thanks to concerned residents who lived in the area, found a new beginning with the SLAR team.
“He was covered in fleas and has a few wounds, but tonight, he’s bathed, fed, safe, and finally resting after who knows what he’s been through,” SLAR added.
As soon as he was picked up, Murdock greeted his new caregivers with gentle tail wags and the sweetest smile. Despite his ordeal, he was nothing but pure love. After all this time, Murdock understood that he wasn’t alone anymore.
Murdock Deserves A Loving Home

It took only a few moments for Murdock to show his true personality in a new environment. Once he realized he was finally safe, his lively character literally stunned everyone.
He doesn’t let his blindness slog him down. He memorizes voices quickly, follows the sound of laughter, and uses his nose like a compass to navigate new places. And last but not least, Murdock gallops, like, really gallops!
“To watch him play is pure joy. He gallops and hops everywhere he goes — that’s just how he moves, full of light and life,” SLAR wrote in another post.
His contagious happiness and zest for life are beyond words. Even though he has lost everything in a single day, Murdock still embraces life with every inch of his body. He’s eager to meet new people, gets along with other dogs amazingly, and loves kids.
His unbreakable spirit serves as an inspiration for everyone.
“If Murdock can find this much happiness after all he’s been through, then there’s a lot we can all learn from him,” the Illinois rescue concluded.
Hopefully, his future family will see him for the remarkable, resilient soul he is.
Good luck, Murdock!
