Stray animals in St. Louis, Missouri often face a hard and uncertain reality. For many of them, each day brings fresh risk, little comfort, and no clear promise of what comes next.
The team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis refuses to accept that as the end of the story.
They head into neighborhoods again and again, driven by the same mission each time, to find dogs who have been abandoned or mistreated and give them a real shot at safety, care, and a better life.
During one of those outings, they were led to an old house that had been left behind.
What waited behind it was heartbreaking. In the backyard stood a single dog, chained up and alone, silently hoping someone would finally notice he was there and come to help.
Trapped And Forgotten
When rescuers from SRSL arrived at the property, they discovered a small dog tethered to a heavy chain beside a doghouse. He had almost no food or water and appeared exhausted, lying motionless on the grass.
“The callousness of this act alone gives us chills,” the Stray Rescue team shared on Facebook.
Donna Lochmann, SRSL’s veteran rescuer, was deeply moved by the sight.
“Why someone felt you deserved to suffer with that huge chain is one of the world’s greatest mysteries. You’re free,” SRSL wrote.
The frightened dog, later named Eskimo Joe, seemed to realize that his rescuers were there to help. As Donna and her team used bolt cutters to release him, he leaned into them as if thanking them for coming.
Once free, Eskimo Joe was lifted into Donna’s Jeep. For the first time in who knows how long, he was safe.
“He stared at Donna during his freedom ride and loved the heated seats,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis posted.
A New Beginning
At the rescue center, Eskimo Joe received a thorough medical checkup.
Tests showed he was positive for heartworm, but his condition was treatable, and the team wasted no time beginning his care.
Despite all he had been through, it quickly became clear that Eskimo Joe had a gentle heart. His calm nature and affection made it easy for the team to find him a loving foster home.
His foster mom was instantly smitten.
“He is the most gentle soul I have ever met. He is crate trained, potty trained, and loves to go for walks. He is a polite boy, he sits for food/treats, loves a good chin scratch, and has quickly become a cuddly couch buddy,” she said.
Over time, Eskimo Joe’s transformation was remarkable. Gone was the frightened, chained dog. In his place was a happy, playful pup who finally understood what love felt like.
“He is genuinely curious of the world around him and will need walks/time outside to quietly observe now that he’s free from his chain. This guy is as sweet as can be and deserves nothing but the best! Let’s find his forever home, he’s so ready,” his foster mom shared.
Eskimo Joe is thriving in foster care, his eyes full of curiosity and hope. After enduring such hardship, he is finally free to enjoy the world around him and experience the kindness every dog deserves.
