For those who dedicate their lives to animal rescue, few moments are more fulfilling than watching a longtime shelter dog finally leave for a loving home. It’s the kind of moment that makes every exhausting shift and sleepless night worthwhile.
That’s exactly how the staff at a Maryland shelter felt when Rigsby, a friendly black Labrador, was adopted. He had found a family, a cozy home, and what seemed to be the joyful ending he deserved.
But no one could have imagined that six years later, everything would unravel. Rigsby, once cherished and cared for, was discovered abandoned in a public park. The only clues to his identity were the tags still hanging from his collar.
From Forever Home To Forgotten
Despite the challenges posed by black dog syndrome, a widespread issue in shelters across the country, Rigsby had beaten the odds: he was adopted into what looked like the perfect home.
The team at Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Maryland celebrated his departure with hugs and heartfelt goodbyes, confident that Rigsby’s new life was just beginning.
Then, six years later, a single phone call shattered that belief and brought Rigsby back into their lives under heartbreaking circumstances.
Now ten years old, Rigsby was found alone in a nearby dog park. He wore a rabies tag and a collar decorated with playful charms, but there was no one with him. His adopters had left him behind, stating they no longer wanted him.
“Rigsby is a 10 year old lab who was dumped at a dog park with his rabies tag and a name tag that says #SWEETHRT & #ICHASECATS ☹️ His owners were called and they do not want him back,” volunteer Madeline stated on Instagram.
The shelter staff was devastated. Despite being discarded, Rigsby remained gentle and affectionate.
When he returned to the shelter, he greeted everyone warmly, just like the dog they had known years before.
He was still house-trained, polite, and eager to meet new people. But time had taken its toll. Rigsby showed signs of muscle loss in his hips and had developed a benign fatty tumor. His condition meant he would require permanent hospice care going forward.
A Second Chance At Love
They say when one door closes, another opens, and for Rigsby, that proved true. Just days after his return, hope arrived.
The Forgotten Pet Advocates stepped in and found him a foster home with a compassionate woman named Linda and her dog, Bentley.
Linda had been searching for a senior black dog to foster, and Rigsby’s story reached her at the perfect moment.
“He will be spoiled rotten and most of all loved. His every wish will come true. He couldn’t be in a better place,” FPA wrote on Facebook.
Initially, there was uncertainty about how Rigsby would adapt to his new environment and bond with Bentley. But from the moment they met, the three formed a deep and instant connection, as though they had always been a family.
Today, they are inseparable.
“Rigsby has settled right in perfectly and Bentley is so happy to have him there! They sleep side by side and Rigsby just wants to be near both, his brother and his Mama! We couldn’t be happier for this sweet boy,” FPA concluded.
After enduring heartbreak and abandonment, Rigsby has finally found peace. Surrounded by love and comfort, he is exactly where he belongs and he couldn’t be happier.
