No matter how old they get or how “well-behaved” they are, there’s one thing we often overlook when it comes to our four-legged friends: they stay true to their habits, no matter what! Even as they reach the autumn of their lives, dogs simply love routine.
Nicole Michelle, a dog owner from New York, recently learned this the hard way when her 13-year-old senior dog, Bruiser, orchestrated an entire ordeal in their backyard.
The reason?
His routine!
Bruiser, who normally goes out back for potty time, couldn’t do so now due to a new deck being built. However, he didn’t see things that way.
Potty ‘Incident’ No One Expected

Bruiser has enjoyed his golden years to the fullest so far, and there isn’t a single thing he would change. Literally!
When his mom, Nicole, and her boyfriend, went out of town recently, they asked a friend to keep an eye on Bruiser overnight. The task seemed simple and it only had one rule: not to let Bruiser go potty time out back like he usually does due to a deck being built.
Instead, the friend was advised to take the dog in the front. But, as it turned out, Bruiser didn’t like that idea!

Staying true to his routine, this 100-pound pup refused to go anywhere but his regular potty spot.
Bruiser’s sitter tried her best to keep him away from the deep holes dug for deck footings. She kept him on a leash the entire time, until Bruiser pulled the other way – and fell into a hole.

Just like that, Bruiser found himself in quite a pickle: all due to his stubbornness. His chubby frame filled the hole completely. His sitter tried hard to get him out, but Bruiser remained stuck completely.
Fortunately, animal control, accompanied by the Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company, a volunteer organization from New York, arrived at the scene within minutes.

After some serious work, an hour and a half later, they widened the hole enough for Bruiser to come out unharmed. Before long, he was successfully rescued by the team and back on his paws again.
“We don’t just help people we help our furry friends too. This morning crews were dispatched to assist Elmira Animal Control to rescue a dog. Upon arrival crews found “Bruiser”in quite a predicament as he had fallen into a post hole. Bruiser was quickly extricated from the hole unharmed,” the New York organization shared on Facebook.
“Acting Like Nothing Even Happened”

As soon as Nicole received the news about Bruiser’s mishap in the yard, she cut her trip short and returned home. Fortunately, everything turned out to be fine. Bruiser remained unharmed and without a scratch!
Even more, he acted like nothing happened.
“Thanks everyone!!! He’s totally fine & acting like nothing even happened 🤦🏻♀️ we’re very appreciative for all of those who helped our old man today,” Nicole responded in the comments.
While Bruiser’s unexpected “potty incident” didn’t cause any real trouble, it’s a good reminder that even senior doggos need to watch their step… especially in the backyard!
