The couple was driving through Fresno when something along the roadside made them stop looking ahead and focus hard on the ditch nearby.
There, curled into herself, was a dog who clearly was not okay. She was alone, trembling badly, and tucked down low as if she had no idea where else to go. It was the kind of sight that makes the rest of the world go quiet for a second.
They pulled over right away.
As they hurried closer, the situation became even more painful. Pressed against the shaking dog was a newborn puppy, so tiny that the little one’s eyes had not opened yet.
The couple was not from the area, so bringing the mother and baby home was not something they could do. Still, leaving them there was never an option.
They covered both of them with blankets, trying to protect them from the cold while they searched for someone who could help.
Rescue Efforts Bring Hope To The Pair

The couple quickly reached out to a local rescue group, which then contacted Fresno Humane Animal Services for help.
Animal control officer Priscilla Wolcott responded to the call and drove straight to the location. She began searching the area but at first could not find the dogs.
Just as she worried they might have disappeared, the mother dog, later named Momma Maisie, stepped out from the ditch. Curled against her was the tiny puppy, still clinging to her side.

“The puppy was really cold because it had been raining all night the night before,” Wolcott told The Dodo.
From the very beginning, Momma Maisie seemed to trust her. She allowed Wolcott to gently lift both her and the puppy into the car.
Before leaving, Wolcott checked carefully for any other puppies but found none. Fresno Humane then reached out through its rescue network to secure a safe place for the pair.
Friends of the Tracy Animal Shelter in Tracy, California agreed to take them in and arranged for a foster pickup.
Wolcott felt grateful knowing they were headed toward safety, and she admired how fiercely Momma Maisie had guarded her baby despite the harsh conditions.
Recovery Begins In A Foster Home

Once Momma Maisie and her puppy, now named Oreo, arrived at their foster home, it was clear they both needed urgent care.
The mother was dangerously underweight and suffering from multiple parasites. She was placed on a high-protein diet to help her regain strength.
Oreo, only a few days old, required tube feeding and constant monitoring.
Together, they embraced the warmth and care of their new surroundings. With each passing day, Momma Maisie and Oreo grew healthier and stronger.
Weeks later, Oreo began to show her playful personality, enjoying life as a puppy. The shelter described her as “strong-willed.”
Momma Maisie steadily gained weight until she reached a healthy condition.
Soon, Oreo will be ready for spaying, and not long after, both she and her mom will begin the search for permanent homes.
After enduring hunger and cold nights in that ditch, they are finally prepared for the love and comfort they have always deserved.
