In every litter, there’s often that one puppy who stays quiet, sitting back, watching, appearing almost reserved. Many people assume that’s the “chill” one, the safe bet, the pup who might handle life calmly.
Couples often get drawn to that puppy because it seems gentle, low-key, not a whirlwind. It’s a choice made with comfort and hope.
But sometimes, what you think you see isn’t what you get. Traits shift when home becomes familiar, and personalities unfold in unexpected ways.
By the time this couple from New York realized their “calm” pup was not what they expected, their days had already changed in ways they never anticipated.
Well, That Was Unexpected
When Kara and her fiancé, Dave, first took in their new golden retriever, Cheddar, it was a very big day for them.
Everything was about to change for the couple, but they were prepared for it. At their first meeting, Cheddar just ran up to his new mom and demanded cuddles and kisses.
That’s how they knew right away that he would fit in well with them. When compared to his littermates, the couple also noticed that he was quieter and easygoing.
Even when he settled into his new home in New York, he was just relaxed, and there was a hint that he would be a very quiet pup.
However, that relaxed demeanor was just a cover, as Cheddar unveiled his true personality when he realized that his parents already made a commitment to keep him.
He showed his true colors shortly after, and what do you know; Cheddar is a golden retriever who has lots of zoomies and thrives on chaos.
Everything is a playground for him, and he enjoys just exploring everything in his new home or outside. The couple is so happy to see how well he has adjusted to his new home.
He Finally Let His Guard Down
The couple was over the moon to see that Cheddar was enjoying the perks of his new life as much as possible, so they decided to post his story on Instagram.
One person commented: “That was my second golden, Tucker. We even named him that because he fell asleep and my mom said ‘oh, he’s all tuckered out!’ That was his last calm moment lol.”
I think it’s only a matter of time for all golden retriever puppies before they show their true side. They are all equally adorable after that.
Another person said: “Standard Golden puppy tactics. Works 100% of the time.”
Well, I think we have to give them credit for being so smart and taking advantage of the situation while it’s still fresh. This golden retriever was very successful in tricking his new parents.
Lastly, somebody commented: “Our black lab was tearing around the yard DEMANDING our attention while her sister crawled into our laps. We were not surprised when we learned sleep was a foreign concept to her.”
That’s the hardest part of having a golden retriever. They have so much energy and sleeping is not an option until they get everything out of their system.
It’s clear from the start that this puppy just needed some time to get comfortable with his new humans. When that finally happened, he let his guard down and is now enjoying his life.
