For a long time, the world felt like a frightening place for one young California woman.

Struggling with psychiatric and medical conditions, her severe anxiety often kept her trapped in a cycle of fear. She described herself as incredibly shy, needing something to help her navigate the overwhelming challenges of daily life.

That all changed on a quiet night when she finally met the little dog who would alter the course of her life.

She had seen pictures of the adorable Corgi named Kona before, but seeing her in person was a completely different experience. “It was so surreal,” she recalled of that nighttime introduction. “I never actually got to meet her until she was mine.”

An Uncommon Lifeline

Knowing she needed a lifeline, her new owner instantly began training Kona to be a dedicated service dog.

While Corgis are deeply loved for their short legs and big ears, they aren’t the typical breed people expect to see performing complex medical alerts.

When they go out in public, the duo often turns heads. “People yell, ‘Oh my god, this is service Corgi!'” her owner shared.

It might not be a sight people see very often, but Kona’s small stature doesn’t stop her from doing incredibly important work. Most importantly, she can always get her mom to a safe place when the world becomes too much.

Catching the Panic Before It Starts

Kona’s training allows her to act as an early warning system for her mom’s invisible illnesses.

The attentive little dog alerts to a rising heart rate and incoming panic attacks before they even fully manifest. To get her owner’s attention, Kona will jump up and gently “boop” her knee with her nose.

Her care doesn’t stop during the daytime, either. Kona is specially trained to wake her mom up from terrifying nightmares.

If the anxiety breaks through and her owner begins to cry, Kona is right there to gently lick the tears from her face. She even performs crowd control tasks to ensure her mom has enough personal space in busy environments.

Stepping Out of the Shadows

Before Kona came into her life, the young woman admitted she was just very scared to face the world.

But the little Corgi gave her a newfound sense of independence that she had never experienced before.

“She’s brought me out of my shell in ways I can’t even explain,” her owner said. “Kona and I are like one unit. Where I go, Kona goes.”

With Kona by her side, the impossible suddenly felt entirely possible. She knew that as long as she had her dog, she could do anything.

Discovering Magic Together

Empowered by her new independence, the young woman decided to tackle a place that would normally be a sensory nightmare for someone with severe anxiety: Disneyland.

Riding the tram into the resort’s main entrance plaza, she felt a sense of peace that was entirely new.

It turns out, Kona absolutely loves interacting with the theme park characters. As a child, her owner had always been too terrified to approach the characters herself.

Now, having Kona there gives her something joyful to focus on. It takes the pressure off of her, easing her anxiety while making the experience incredibly fun for both of them.

Two Different Dogs in One

Living with Kona is like having two entirely different dogs, depending on what she is wearing.

When Kona is off duty, she acts like a typical, hyper Corgi. She runs around with endless energy and wants to happily greet everyone she meets.

But the second her service vest goes on, a switch flips. Kona goes straight into work mode, locking her eyes onto her mom and completely ignoring the rest of the world.

That laser focus has given a once-fearful woman her life back. As they conquer new adventures together, their connection only grows stronger. “We have a bond like no other,” her owner smiled.
