California Poodle Abandoned at 18 Because His Owners Claimed He Was “Stupid”

California Poodle Abandoned at 18 Because His Owners Claimed He Was “Stupid”

Human cruelty is hard to understand, especially when directed at the innocent dogs who ask for nothing but love.

Figgy’s story is one of those heartbreaking moments that leaves you wondering how anyone could be so unkind.

Time and again, dogs like Figgy prove just how much love they still have to give, even when the world turns its back on them.

Saved Just In Time

At 18 years old, a tiny Toy Poodle named Figgy was brought to a veterinary clinic in California. His owners weren’t there for medical help—they wanted him euthanized.

The frail little dog was blind and had no teeth, but what he lacked physically, he made up for in sweetness and spirit.

When asked why they wanted to end his life, his owners casually replied, “He’s stupid.”

The clinic staff were stunned. No one could believe the level of disregard this dog had been shown after nearly two decades of life.

It took just one glance at Figgy for the team to decide they wouldn’t follow the owners’ wishes.

They performed a full exam and learned that while Figgy had multiple age-related conditions—blindness, arthritis, and toothlessness—he was otherwise doing fairly well for an 18-year-old dog.

Even though he was an old dog, there was no reason to end his life.

Instead of giving up on him, the clinic contacted Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, in San Francisco, California. Without hesitation, the rescue agreed to bring Figgy in.

Knowing he needed a quiet place to decompress and feel safe, founder Sherri Franklin took him home herself.

“He was a total love bug and slept with me curled up in my armpit. I just loved him,” Franklin told The Dodo.

Despite all he had been through, Figgy remained full of affection.

Incredibly, just four days after arriving at Muttville and having his story shared online, Figgy was welcomed into a forever home.

An experienced hospice owner, Eileen, heard about Figgy and immediately reached out.

To her, he wasn’t “stupid” at all—he was perfect.

“He’ll be our fifth hospice angel,” Eileen told The Dodo.

With Eileen, Figgy found warmth, safety, and devotion. He was finally home.

Figgy’s final days will be filled with affection, snuggles, and peace. He will never feel discarded or unwanted again.

“I just couldn’t help but think that these precious angels had given their love and loyalty to someone their entire lives, and certainly didn’t deserve to die alone in a shelter. They deserved love, comfort, and security for whatever time they happened to have left, and I knew that I could provide that,” Eileen said.

Now, Figgy has exactly that—proof that even after immense cruelty, kindness can still win.
