For dogs living in shelters, each day can feel endless as they wait for someone to see their worth.
All they can do is hope that one day, someone will choose them and offer the love they’ve been longing for.
Nitro spent seven years waiting for that moment. Though the shelter had become his home, he never gave up hope that his turn would come.
And just when it seemed like everything was finally falling into place, fate took an unexpected turn.
A Brief Taste Of Joy Turns Into Heartbreak
When Nitro was adopted, the team at The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project, a shelter in Warren, Ohio, celebrated the news.
Nitro was thrilled too, eager to begin what he believed would be the happiest chapter of his life.
Sadly, things didn’t go as planned.
One of the family’s other dogs didn’t get along with Nitro, and after only a few weeks, he was brought back to the shelter.
He returned confused, wondering why he hadn’t been enough.
Though the staff was heartbroken, they refused to give up on Nitro’s future.
“This is definitely not a post we wanted to post, but we remain hopeful for Nitro’s future. Our hearts break for him, as we truly believe he had finally found his forever home,” The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project shared in a Facebook post.
Everyone at the shelter had only praise for Nitro. He was affectionate, full of energy, and loved to play.
He especially enjoyed hiking and swimming, making him a perfect match for someone who loves outdoor adventures.
Unfortunately, with limited volunteers, Nitro rarely gets the chance to explore beyond the shelter.
Still Waiting To Be Truly Seen
When meeting new people, Nitro doesn’t immediately reveal his true self.
“We recognize that when meeting a dog, one expects attention; however, this is something he struggles with during his stay, as this environment is all he knows,” the shelter wrote in an update.
Those who know Nitro best believe that once he’s out of the shelter for good, his real personality will shine.
“We remain optimistic that his perfect match is still out there, and this setback is merely a detour…” the organization shared in their first post following Nitro’s return to the shelter.
Anyone interested in giving Nitro the home he’s waited so long for can contact The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project to arrange a visit.
Nitro deserves to leave the shelter behind and find a family that will love him unconditionally.
