For a dog, the dream is usually simple: a safe place, steady love, and the chance to finally relax.
Too many never get to know that feeling for long.
Chiquitita, a 12-year-old senior dog, had spent much of her life surrounded by uncertainty. Instead of settling into one place where she belonged, she moved between shelters and foster homes, waiting over and over again for someone to choose her.
That wait stretched beyond 650 days.
Then it finally seemed as though her luck had changed. Chiquitita was adopted, and for a moment, it looked like the home she had been hoping for had finally found her.

Her adopters brought her back to the shelter, and the senior girl was left once more without the family she believed she had.
Chiquitita’s Long Journey
Chiquitita’s early life was harsh. She had been used as a bait dog in a cruel dogfighting ring before being rescued. Traumatized and in pain, she required time to recover both physically and emotionally, compounded by an arthritis diagnosis.
Her first shelter was overcrowded, and heartbreakingly, her name appeared on the euthanasia list.
An alumni staff member reached out to Watauga Humane Society in Boone, North Carolina, requesting that they save her. The team agreed, welcoming Chiquitita into their care.
From the moment she arrived, the staff recognized that she needed gentle attention and patience to overcome her fears. Despite her hardships, they saw a spark of sweetness within her.
“Shelter life was not for Chiqui. The noises terrified her, the floor was too slick for her comfort, and she was restless. She spent the first two weeks with us hanging out in our admin offices while she adjusted to her new surroundings,” Watauga Humane Society wrote on Facebook.
Above all, she needed a stable home where she could feel secure and loved.
Thriving In Foster Care
That opportunity came when a caring couple offered to foster her. They welcomed her into their home, providing love and patience, helping her overcome her fears.
Chiquitita enjoyed curling up on the couch with them and joining them for car rides. Surrounded by affection, she began to thrive and rediscover the simple joy of being a dog.
Her fosters worked tirelessly to increase her chances of adoption. They taught her to walk confidently on a leash, attended adoption events, and shared her story with anyone willing to listen during walks.
Despite her charm, months became years, and Chiquitita continued waiting for a family willing to meet her needs.
Her adoption journey was complicated by her need to be the only pet in a household, as she did not get along well with other animals.
When her first foster family had to move, she transitioned to a new foster home, where she quickly won over the hearts of her caregivers.
A Bittersweet Moment
Her second foster family adored her, and Chiquitita showered them with affection in return.
After nearly two years, they officially adopted her, and shelter staff celebrated, overjoyed that the senior dog had finally found a home. After 650 days, she seemed to have a place to call her own.
Tragically, that happiness was short-lived. A few months later, her adoptive family returned her, explaining that they could not meet the care requirements she needed.
“We strongly believe that there is the right home for every shelter pet out there, but we also know that there is the wrong home for them as well. Not every pairing is a perfect match,” the shelter wrote.
While her friends at Watauga Humane Society were heartbroken, they urged the public not to shame the family who made the difficult decision, emphasizing kindness and understanding instead.
Chiquitita may have faced disappointment, but her spirit remains unbroken. She continues waiting patiently for the family who will provide the care, affection, and security she deserves. Her caretakers believe the perfect match is still out there, ready to cherish her golden years.
